Pancake Breakfast Benefit for Gala Padgett Schroeder

This Benefit is for a young wife and mother. Her name is Gala Padgett Schroeder, she lives in Early, Iowa. She was just married Sept. 13th and 2 wks later diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma. She also has an 11yr old son. Gala was in the later stages of the disease when it was discovered. It is a very aggressive cancer, so she is undergoing aggressive treatment. Her dad shaved her head at her request because she wasn't going to let the cancer decide where or when she was to lose her hair. Her 11yr old son also shaved his head to show his love and support for his mother. For questions about the two benefits call Garilyn Willoughby at 712-281-1765. We are trying to help the family defray the cost of everyday living, lodging, transportation, etc.... This family needs all the help and support we can get for them.

NISO Fall Concert Features Uriel Tsachor, Virtuoso Pianist!

The Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra continues A NOTEWORTHY SEASON with its Fall Concert on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:30pm. The concert will be held in the B.J. Haan Auditorium on the campus of Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA.

Composer and conductor Christopher Stanichar leads NISO in its first performance of the season. The concert begins with Stanichar’s sublime Sunflowers, followed by the substantial Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1, a noteworthy showpiece performed impressively by pianist Uriel Tsachor. The inspirational Borodin Symphony No. 2 concludes the remainder of the concert.

Head of the piano area at the University of Iowa School of Music, Uriel Tsachor has appeared in recitals in major venues in Europe, Asia and the US. He was invited by Zubin Mehta to perform with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and played twenty-five different concerti with major orchestras in Europe, Israel and the US. Winner of the Queen Elisabeth and Busoni competitions, Tsachor is a graduate of the Juilliard School where he earned his doctorate. Tsachor's discography encompasses twenty-three releases for the EMI, DISCOVER, and DIVOX labels. He has presented masterclasses in the US, Europe and Taiwan. Uriel Tsachor is a "Steinway Artist."

NISO comprises the finest musicians in the tri-state area. Teaching principals are of a professional caliber and function as first chair players and teachers in sectional rehearsals. The orchestra membership
includes adults of all ages as well as gifted music students from area junior high schools, high schools, and colleges. Seven junior high and high school students receive scholarships to continue their private lessons.

NISO is supported by the Iowa Arts Council, the Sioux Center Recreation and Arts Council, the Friends of the Symphony, and individual patrons and business establishments.

Wayne State College "Centennial Celebration Concert"

Historic Site for a special WSC Centennial Celebration concert.

The event will include a new work, The Time Cycle, composed by WSC staff accompanist Philip Pfaltzgraff and featuring WSC music faculty and students, which was inspired by the writings of alumnus and poet
John G. Neihardt.

Nebraska Poet Laureate in Perpetuity John G. Neihardt often referred to Wayne as his "hill of vision." In his autobiography, All is But a Beginning, Neihardt wrote of WSC, "It was as though the little college had been created for me ...lifted me to a higher, creative level of being. It was simply in the air of the world, and I think it radiated from J. M. Pile."

Utilizing writings from the Neihardt works "The Poet's Town," "Prelude,"
"Prayer of an Alien Soul," and "Hark the Music," The Time Cycle for choir, wind ensemble, piano, and soprano soloist explores our links to the past, to the universe around us, and to our personal expectations of what the future may hold.

The Centennial Concert will be at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 17, 2009 in
Ramsey Auditorium on the WSC campus. The Centennial Concert
is free and open to the public.

The Centennial Concert will be followed by a dessert and coffee reception in the Ramsey Auditorium lobby, hosted by President Richard and Marilyn Collings.

Floyd Valley Hospital is hosting American Heart Association’s Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid course on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Conference Center Room #1. The cost for this course is $30.00, payable prior to the program.

The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid Course teaches how to manage illness and injuries in a child in the first few minutes until professional help arrives This class is taught by a certified American Heart Association instructor.

Floyd Valley Hospital will once again host the popular Babysitting Class on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the lower level Conference Center Room #1. The cost for this course is $15.00, which includes lunch, a snack, and materials. Pre-payment is necessary a week prior to the class. There are still openings in this session.

The Babysitting Class is for boys and girls ages 11 to 15. Subjects covered in class include: Safety, emergencies, feeding, diapering, bathing, bedtime, getting a babysitting job and pay scale.
