During the Civil War many women turned to needlework to fill the long lonesome hours and as a refuge from the stress and worry of war. They utilized their skills to support their families, create necessary items for soldiers and raise money for the cause. When the war was over they expressed feelings about the past by stitching commemorative quilts celebrating victory and honoring those who died. A century and a half later the sacrifices are still remembered with commemorative fabrics, patterns and quilts that mark the Sesquicentennial of the War Between the States.Covered by Glory: Civil War Commemorative Quilts will showcase several quilts, some that were made during the era and commemorative quilts made from ten to 150 years later. Photographs, archives and more will enhance this exhibit remembering the Civil War.

Table for Five . . . Thousand!

What can you do with a few loaves of bread and fish? Quite a lot!!
This is the miracle described in all four of the Gospels of the New Testament in which Jesus directed his disciples to feed five thousand people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. And you can watch it performed in the musical Table for Five . . . Thousand!, to be performed by the youth of Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Avenue, Clive, Iowa on Saturday, February 11 at 4 and 5 p.m. and at 10 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 12.
Over sixty children will sing, dance and act out this musical, by Tom Long and Allen Pote, based on Matthew 14: 13-21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:5-15. The performance of the musical is an annual tradition for Soli Deo Musica, the fine arts ministry of Faith Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church. Other musicals performed by the youth at Faith Lutheran Church include Survivor Babylon (2011) Once Upon A Parable (2010) and Are We There Yet? (2009).
To get to Faith Lutheran Church, located in the western part of the Des Moines area, take Interstate-235 to the Valley West Drive exit and head north to University Avenue. Go west on University Avenue beyond the K-Mart store. Faith Lutheran Church is on the north side of University by the Clive water tower.

On January 19, 2012 the Johnson County Historical Society will open a new temporary exhibit The Only One. The Johnson County Historical Society and the African American Museum of Iowa are collaborating on this exhibit, which focuses on the experience of being a minority in Iowa through the use of photographs and oral histories.
Iowa’s historically low population of ethnic minorities is gradually changing, but the population demographics of ethnic minorities only recently passed 10%, and the African American population has yet to surpass 2%. The exhibit includes pictures, artifacts and personal stories from local and statewide sources. Historical information provides the background for the exploration of photographs and first person narrative on life in Iowa as an African American from the 19th century to present day.
A large part of the exhibit was the collection of oral histories. Interviews were conducted with individuals who shared their stories of struggle and success in the face of adversity. To date, 35 oral histories have been completed as a part of this project. This exhibit will feature video of several of these oral history interviews, as well as providing a place for visitors to share their own stories.
The Only One will have an opening reception at the Johnson County Historical Society on January 19th at 5:30 pm, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2012. At the African American Museum of Iowa, the exhibit will open on January 14.
This project is funded in-part by Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Rap Guide to Evolution highlights Iowa City Darwin Day

The Rap Guide to Evolution, a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway theatre production, will make Iowa City its first stop as it goes on the road with a free public performance Sunday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in Iowa City's Englert Theatre.

The performance will serve as the culmination of the sixth annual Iowa City Darwin Day celebrations, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 10-12. The events celebrate the life and achievements of Charles Darwin, who developed the theory of evolution. This year's Darwin Day takes the theme "Bird Origins & Evolution" and will feature lectures by prominent evolutionary scientists Ellen Ketterson of Indiana University, Philip Currie of the University of Alberta and Scott Edwards of Harvard University.

All of the Darwin Day events are free and open to the public. Doors to the Englert will open at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, for "The Rap Guide," with seating at 6:30 p.m.

The Rap Guide to Evolution is the brainchild of Canadian rap artist and polymath Baba Brinkman, who gained notoriety for his award-winning hip-hop adaptation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. His newest performance piece is a two-man show in which Brinkman is joined by DJ Jamie Simmonds of the United Kingdom. Together they use Darwinian theory and DNA to examine the origins of hip-hop and human behavior, as well as exploring gender relations and inner-city violence through the lens of evolution.

Provocative, entertaining, and informative, the show earned both critical and scientific praise and enjoyed a five-month run at New York City's SoHo Playhouse before beginning a nationwide tour.

On January 19, 2012 the Johnson County Historical Society will open a new temporary exhibit The Only One. The Johnson County Historical Society and the African American Museum of Iowa are collaborating on this exhibit, which focuses on the experience of being a minority in Iowa through the use of photographs and oral histories.
Iowa’s historically low population of ethnic minorities is gradually changing, but the population demographics of ethnic minorities only recently passed 10%, and the African American population has yet to surpass 2%. The exhibit includes pictures, artifacts and personal stories from local and statewide sources. Historical information provides the background for the exploration of photographs and first person narrative on life in Iowa as an African American from the 19th century to present day.
A large part of the exhibit was the collection of oral histories. Interviews were conducted with individuals who shared their stories of struggle and success in the face of adversity. To date, 35 oral histories have been completed as a part of this project. This exhibit will feature video of several of these oral history interviews, as well as providing a place for visitors to share their own stories.
The Only One will have an opening reception at the Johnson County Historical Society on January 19th at 5:30 pm, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2012. At the African American Museum of Iowa, the exhibit will open on January 14.
This project is funded in-part by Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

On Thursday, February 16 at 5:30, local historian and author Paul Juhl will discuss his recent book A Curious Connection: Vinnie Ream and the Statue of Samuel Kirkwood as part of the Third Thursday series at the Johnson County Historical Society Museum. This event is free and open to the public.
Ream, who spent her summers in Iowa City, at the age of 18 was the first female to receive a federal commission for an artistic work. She famously created the marble statue of President Lincoln which stands in the United States Capitol Building. Ream additionally created a bronze of Iowa Governor Samuel Kirkwood, along with several other sculptural works. Juhl will explore Vinnie Ream’s fascinating personal and professional life and includes several photographs of her artistic work as well.

On January 19, 2012 the Johnson County Historical Society will open a new temporary exhibit The Only One. The Johnson County Historical Society and the African American Museum of Iowa are collaborating on this exhibit, which focuses on the experience of being a minority in Iowa through the use of photographs and oral histories.
Iowa’s historically low population of ethnic minorities is gradually changing, but the population demographics of ethnic minorities only recently passed 10%, and the African American population has yet to surpass 2%. The exhibit includes pictures, artifacts and personal stories from local and statewide sources. Historical information provides the background for the exploration of photographs and first person narrative on life in Iowa as an African American from the 19th century to present day.
A large part of the exhibit was the collection of oral histories. Interviews were conducted with individuals who shared their stories of struggle and success in the face of adversity. To date, 35 oral histories have been completed as a part of this project. This exhibit will feature video of several of these oral history interviews, as well as providing a place for visitors to share their own stories.
The Only One will have an opening reception at the Johnson County Historical Society on January 19th at 5:30 pm, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2012. At the African American Museum of Iowa, the exhibit will open on January 14.
This project is funded in-part by Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
