Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians\, as seen through the lens of Micha el Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty an d resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008\, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist\, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to h is photography\, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the s ubtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress\, or traje. Maya n culture predates Rome by almost 1\,000 years and has endured roughly s ix times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero\, had the most adva nced writing system in the western hemisphere\, and claim numerous astro nomical achievements. Today's Maya are acclaimed as some of the finest w eavers in the world.\n\nAn opening reception will be held at 5:30pm on J anuary 26th\, followed by a UNLV Forum lecture by the artist in the muse um’s auditorium. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians\, as seen through the lens of Micha el Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty an d resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008\, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist\, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to h is photography\, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the s ubtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress\, or traje. Maya n culture predates Rome by almost 1\,000 years and has endured roughly s ix times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero\, had the most adva nced writing system in the western hemisphere\, and claim numerous astro nomical achievements. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians\, as seen through the lens of Micha el Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty an d resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008\, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist\, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to h is photography\, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the s ubtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress\, or traje. Maya n culture predates Rome by almost 1\,000 years and has endured roughly s ix times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero\, had the most adva nced writing system in the western hemisphere\, and claim numerous astro nomical achievements. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians\, as seen through the lens of Micha el Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty an d resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008\, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist\, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to h is photography\, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the s ubtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress\, or traje. Maya n culture predates Rome by almost 1\,000 years and has endured roughly s ix times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero\, had the most adva nced writing system in the western hemisphere\, and claim numerous astro nomical achievements.
