DESCRIPTION:During the past decade the minimum duration of optical pulse
s has fallen from 5 femtoseconds to less then 100 attoseconds. The proce
sses involved in the creation of these pulses will be explored.\n\nInten
se femtosecond laser pulses drove this advance by forcing electron wave
packets to (1) tunnel from the atom or molecules\, (2) move under the fo
rce of the time dependent electric field and (3) reunite with the parent
orbital\, thereby converting many photons into one. I will describe how
this process maps onto an electron interferometry. Attosecond XUV pulse
 s are a by-product of this interference (or collision).\n\nThis three-st
ep process can be readily manipulated\, allowing us to measure the attos
econd pulse as it is born – and much more. We image orbitals\, measure a
ttosecond electronic wave packet motion created by tunnelling and follow
chemical dynamics\, all while generating high harmonics of the fundamen
 tal.\n\nAbout Paul Corkum http://jaslab.ca/corkum_e.html

DESCRIPTION:Branch meeting\, open to all. Light refreshments from 18:00
\, talk from 18:30.\n\nRichard Feynman was asked what single idea would
be the best help to revive science after a new Dark Age\, and the messag
e he chose to pass on was just "Everything is made of Atoms." \n\nFrom
the speculations of Greek philosophers\, through the kinetic theory of g
ases and the structure of solids\, to the early applications of quantum
mechanics\, the concept of the atom and its modelling have been a signif
icant thread in the development of modern science\, in particular for Ph
ysics and Chemistry. \n\nSome of that story is explored in this talk\, w
hich tries to look behind the usually simplistic treatments of the text-
 books at what really happened.

Guided tour.\n13:00 – 14:30 Lunch in the café. The timing of the afterno
on activities is optional. \n14:30 – 16:00 Walk round the World Wetlands
and Wildside areas or return to the Waterlife area or do both\, whateve
 r you like.\n16:00 - 16:30 Refreshments in café.\n16:30 Depart\, but do
look in the shop on the way out.\n\nThe London Wetland Centre is a beaut
iful wildlife reserve and international award winning visitor attraction
in Barnes\, just across the river from Hammersmith. \n\nIt is acclaimed
to be the best urban site in Europe to watch wildlife. It supports a we
alth of wetland biodiversity including bitterns\, kingfishers\, a colony
of endangered water voles and migratory birds\, which arrive in large n
umbers from around the world. May is a good month for seeing some of the
se migratory birds.\n\nThe Centre is also a haven for people. You can wa
tch the wildlife in one of several special viewing hides\, enjoy a walk
around the reserve and have a meal in the Water’s Edge café. \n\nOur vis
it will enable you to do all 3 of these things. The paths are all level.
Bring binoculars and clothing suitable for the weather on the day.\n\nT
he Centre is divided into 2 sections. On the right of the visitor centre
is the Waterlife with its stunning views of the water and birds\, where
our guide will take us in the morning and on the left is the World Wetl
ands and Wildside\, which we can wander round in the afternoon.\n\nGetti
ng there: The centre is easily accessible by public transport\, just a 1
0 minute bus ride from Hammersmith Tube station and close to both Barnes
and Barnes Bridge stations.\n\nBy bus: Hop on the number 283 bus direct
to the centre from Hammersmith bus station (stand K). Alternatively bus
es 33\, 72 and 209 stop nearby (alight at the Red Lion stop\, approximat
ely 150 metres walk from the wetland centre).\n\nBy rail: Barnes rail st
ation is just 25 minutes from Waterloo or 10 minutes from Clapham Juncti
on. It is then a 15 minute walk to the wetland centre (or 5 minutes by b
uses 72 or 33). You can also alight at Barnes Bridge station then walk t
hrough Barnes village (about a 15 minute walk) or catch a 209 bus (aligh
t at the bus stop opposite the Red Lion pub\, which is approximately 150
metres from the Centre).\n\nBy tube: Hammersmith tube (on the Piccadill
y and District & Circle Lines) is the nearest tube station. From here it
is just a 10 minute bus ride (see ‘by bus’).

DESCRIPTION:On the Capital Ring Walk 11 we passed north of Hampstead Hea
th. Since we have postponed the remaining sections till spring we though
t it would be opportune to explore Hampstead Heath.\n\nThe city of Londo
n claim that “Hampstead Heath is one of London’s most popular open space
s\, situated just six kilometres from Trafalgar Square. An island of bea
utiful countryside\, the magic of Hampstead Heath lies not only in its r
ich wildlife and extensive sports and recreational opportunities\, but a
lso in its proximity and accessibility to millions of people. There is a
  zoo\, an athletics track\, an education centre\, extensive children's f
acilities\, three swimming ponds and a Lido.”\nThere are numerous litera
ture references:\n\n“Hampstead Heath was featured on the television prog
ramme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the London area\, w
ith a focus on Parliament Hill to the south. The episode was presented b
y Bill Oddie\, who lives in nearby Gospel Oak\, and watches birds there
regularly.\n\nWhilst living in London\, Karl Marx and his family went to
the Heath regularly\, as their favourite outing. John Atkinson Grimshaw
\, Victorian era painter\, painted an elaborate night-time scene of Hamp
stead Hill in oils. Hampstead Heath also provided the backdrop for the o
pening scene in Victorian writer Wilkie Collins' novel The Woman in Whit
e.\n\nHampstead Heath forms part of the main location for Will Self's 20
06 novel The Book of Dave. Half of the book is set 500 years in the futu
re\, when all of London has been submerged by a catastrophic flood\, lea
ving only the hilltops of Hampstead and the Heath as a tiny island - The
Island of Ham. The parts of the book set in the present-day also make r
eferences to the Heath's high and dry location which would preserve the
area in the event of sea level rises over 100m. Self writes\, "...the He
ath...this peculiar island\, a couple of square miles of woodland and me
adow set down in the lagoon of the city."\n\nThe radio story titled The
Strange Case of the Murder in Wax written by Denis Green and Anthony Bou
cher and broadcast on January 7\, 1946\,featured a murderer who killed w
omen on Hampstead Heath. Mrs. Miniver\, by Jan Struther\, includes a cha
pter called "On Hampstead Heath"\, where actions take place. A crucial e
vent at the beginning of the novel Smiley's People\, by John LeCarre (19
79)\, takes place on Hampstead Heath\, which is also the site of subsequ
ent investigations. These scenes are also depicted in the BBC mini-serie
s of the same name (1982).” etc.\nSo let’s see what it is all about.\n\n
Meet at 10.45 am Gospel Oak Railway Station and explore the trail 2 Heat
h Circuit (~6 miles) End time approximate.

DESCRIPTION:Discussions about the influence of human activities on clima
te usually either focus on projections of climate change based on comple
x climate models\, or on instrumental records and reconstruction of past
climates from proxy data (e.g. gases trapped in ice cores\, tree rings
\, etc). \n\nThis situation is somewhat unfortunate because it might then
seem that anthropogenic forcing of climate is a topic that can only be
understood by climate modellers\, experts in the interpretation of proxy
data\, and statisticians who have the tools to analyse climatic time se
ries.\n\nIn this talk\, building upon a recent Discussion Paper publishe
d by the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London\, I will take a v
ery different perspective on the matter. \n\nThe essential idea is that
\, instead of just debating climate model projections or time series anal
ysis\, it is useful also to reflect on the magnitude of the forcing of c
limate change due to human activities - a forcing which is well understo
od and solidly rooted in physics. \n\nTo do so\, I will provide simple “
back-of-the-envelope” calculations to put the relevant numbers into pers
pective\, with a particular focus on the role played by the ocean circul
 ation. \n\nTea/Coffee from 18:00

DESCRIPTION:A public debate between Professor James Ladyman (Bristol Uni
versity) and Professor David Wallace (Oxford University).\n\nIn recent y
ears\, much progress has been made in the development of Everettian quan
tum mechanics. \n\nDavid Wallace argues that the reasons why we should b
elieve in other branches of reality are essentially the same as why we s
hould believe in unobservable and distant objects\, like planets and gal
axies\, namely that positing their existence is the best explanation of
what we do observe. \n\nIn this debate\, Wallace will explain why Everet
t is the best way to make sense of quantum theory\, and Ladyman will arg
ue that the case for many worlds is not yet proven.

the renewable element of their energy budgets\, it seems inevitable that
responsible use of fossil fuels will have to continue for many decades.
Gasification of coal underground using boreholes offers a clean and eff

create voids into which carbon dioxide can be injected\, thus offering t
he prospect of bridging our way to a wholly renewable energy economy by
using the energy in coal without further damaging the atmosphere.\n\nEve

nd Professor Roy Sambles FRS\, this residential conference will bring to
gether world leaders plus young researchers in two areas: isotropic part
icles in anisotropic liquid crystals and colloidal liquid crystals (clay
platelets or carbon nanotubes in isotropic fluids for example). \n\nThe
se two areas of modern materials research are rich in complex science an
d have substantial applications potential ranging from e-inks through to
  biofluidics.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Gary Mathlin - Department of Physics\, Universit
y of Bath\n\nIt is thought likely that there have been creation myths fo
r as long as there have been people. It seems to be a natural and compel
ling human urge to ask\, and seek answers to\, questions such as ‘where
did the world come from?’ and ‘did it always exist or was it brought int
o being at some point in the past?’ \n \nUntil little over a century ago
these questions were firmly in the domain of philosophy and theology –
science had nothing to say on the subject. But massive steps forward in
the technology and design of telescopes\, along with the brilliant insig
hts of people such as Einstein\, Gammov and Friedmann have changed every
 thing. \n \nToday cosmology is a branch of physics – today’s cosmologica
l theories are firmly rooted in observational evidence. Within the brief
two decades or so that I have been involved in this area\, cosmology no
w claims to having explained the structure and evolution of the universe
  – all that remains is for a few fine details to be filled in…or is ther
e more to it? Is modern cosmology just another creation myth? \n \nIn
this talk I will very briefly explain the current ‘standard model’ of c
osmology\, the so called ‘hot big bang’ model and describe the observati
onal evidence upon which it stands. I will then go on to talk about some
recent and puzzling observations that don’t fit with the model\, some o
f these suggest that the model is in need of some adjustment\, some sugg
est the model may need to be torn up and started over.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Colin White - University of Portsmouth \n\nIn this
informal and light-hearted presentation Colin will demonstrate\, using a
variety of sports equipment\, a wide range of remarkable and unexpected
flight phenomena. He will explore such concepts as:\n• The ways
in which friction\, spin\, drag and bounce influence projectile paths a
nd\, hence\, the game plans\,\n• The optimum kicking strategies
for rugby conversions and soccer penalty shoot-outs\,\n• How cri
cket ball swing and reverse swing occur\,\n• How shot put range
is affected by where in the world the sports stadium is located\, and ev
en the direction of the throw.\n• He might also be persuaded to
present his thoughts on such important issues as:\n• How to play
tennis in the nude safely (essential for the enthusiastic sports naturi
st)\,\n• The chances of survival should your parachute fail whil
e in freefall (maybe even more essential)\,\n• The best pitching
technique for competitive iPod throwing contests.\n\nSports players are
emotional individuals\, and so they are particularly susceptible to a r
ange of myths and legends which surround their sport. A key aspect of th
is presentation will be the mathematical debunking of some of these ‘pe
rceived wisdoms’. Examples include:\n•	The ‘late swing’ of a cricket bal
l (no such thing)\n•	The reduction in range when shooting a ball into a
headwind (usually the range is increased)\n•	The optimum impact point of
a snooker cue onto the cue ball (seldom the centre)\n•	Balls never boun
ce higher than they are dropped (oh\, yes they do – if you are prepared
to cheat a little)\nThose who have seen Colin perform know that they are
in for a presentation that is lively\, informative\, entertaining and s
 tuffed with humorous anecdotes.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Roy Sambles F.R.S. - Department of Physics\, Exete
r University\n\nIn the early part of the 20th century our understanding
of the world was dramatically changed. First Einstein interpreted the ph
otoelectric effect to show that light (convincingly demonstrated by Thom
as Young in 1803 to be wavelike) appeared to comprise 'packets' of energ
y 'photons' and was thus seemingly particulate (as Newton with his 'corp
uscular' theory of light had also conjectured in the 17th century). Some
20+ years later\, in 1927\, Davisson and Germer in the USA and Thomson
in the UK showed that electrons (up till then perceived as particles) co
uld diffract - they behaved as waves. This laid the foundations for the
now well-established quantum mechanical description of the Universe and
'wave-particle' duality. These historical events together with some of t
he remarkable consequences of the resulting new understanding of our Uni
 verse will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Cosmology confronts some of the most fundamental questions i
n the whole of science. How and when did our universe begin? \n\nWhat is
it made of? How did it acquire its current appearance? There has been
enormous progress in the past few years towards answering these questio
ns. \n\nFor example\, recent observations have established that our univ
erse contains an unexpected mix of components that include not only ordi
nary atoms\, but also exotic dark matter and a new form of energy called
dark energy. Gigantic surveys of galaxies reveal how the universe is st
ructured. \n\nLarge supercomputer simulations recreate the evolution of
the universe and provide the means to relate processes occuring near the
beginning of the Universe with the structures seen today. A coherent pi
cture of cosmic evolution\, going back to about a micro-second after the
Big Bang\, is beginning to emerge. \n\nHowever\, fundamental issues\, l
ike the nature of the dark energy\, remain unresolved. These will requir
e understanding what went on at even earlier times.
