A consideration of the forcing of climate change using simple physics

IOP Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT
Wed, 30 May 2012, 18:30 – 21:00

Discussions about the influence of human activities on climate usually either focus on projections of climate change based on complex climate models, or on instrumental records and reconstruction of past climates from proxy data (e.g. gases trapped in ice cores, tree rings, etc).

This situation is somewhat unfortunate because it might then seem that anthropogenic forcing of climate is a topic that can only be understood by climate modellers, experts in the interpretation of proxy data, and statisticians who have the tools to analyse climatic time series.

In this talk, building upon a recent Discussion Paper published by the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London, I will take a very different perspective on the matter.

The essential idea is that, instead of just debating climate model projections or time series analysis, it is useful also to reflect on the magnitude of the forcing of climate change due to human activities - a forcing which is well understood and solidly rooted in physics.

To do so, I will provide simple “back-of-the-envelope” calculations to put the relevant numbers into perspective, with a particular focus on the role played by the ocean circulation.

Tea/Coffee from 18:00

Event Title: A consideration of the forcing of climate change using simple physics
Speaker(s): Dr Arnaud Czaja
Organised by: IOP London and South East Branch
Co-sponsored by: IOP Environmental Physics Group
Requires registration: Yes
Contact details: Branch Secretary Email: londonsoutheast@physics.org

High-speed imaging for dynamic testing of materials and structures

Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NT, UK
Mon, 18 Nov – Wed, 20 Nov 2013

An understanding of the dynamic behaviour of materials is essential for informing structural performance for e.g. crashworthiness, manufacturing capability, blast mitigation. Numerical simulation has seen spectacular progress with the advent of faster and cheaper computing power. However, such computations require detailed material models for which parameters have to be identified experimentally.

Event Title: High-speed imaging for dynamic testing of materials and structures
Organised by: IOP Applied Physics and Technology Division
Sponsored by: DYMAT Association
Requires registration: Yes
Contact details: Joanne Hemstock, Tel: +44 (0)20 7470 4800, E-mail: joanne.hemstock@iop.org
More info: aptd.iopconfs.org
