DESCRIPTION:October 7\, 2011 – April 15\, 2012 \nPreview and Reception o
f Ansel Adams: A Legacy for MAM Members and Donors\, October 6\, 5-7 PM
Exhibition Opening: October 7\, 5-8 PM Gallery Talk: Bruce Hamilton of t
 he Sierra Club\, October 7\, 7 PM \nMajor Sponsor Sierra Club \nProducin
g Sponsored First Security Bank\n\nMissoula Art Museum is proud to host
a definitive exhibition by one of America’s most legendary photographers
. The exhibition Ansel Adams: A Legacy consists of over 130 gelatin silv
er prints by the artist whom many consider an American master. \n\nWe ca
nnot overstate Adams’ role in the construction of a contemporary visual
language to interpret nature.\nAdams married his craft with an intense l
ove for the environment and his deeply rooted expressions will not be lo
st on our Montana audience. As he once stated\, “I make photographs for
personal expression. If it is used for the cause—why\, I’m very happy.”
\n\nThe San Francisco born photographer was raised in a nurturing and cul
tured environment by parents who believed in the Transcendentalist ideas
of individuality and the direct union with God in nature. Bored and dis
heartened by school as a boy\, Adams instead found intellectual freedom
in the liberal arts\, his father arranging tutelage in studies including
ancient Greek and the piano.\n\nAdams fell in love with nature and his
ability to capture its truest qualities on film when he first visited Yo
semite National Park on a family vacation. It was in Yosemite Valley tha
t he took his first photographs with his first camera\, a Kodak Box Brow
nie. Adams life was devoted to his work\, turning out meticulously produ
ced images of the American West and its National Parks. Adams sought to
express the spiritual connection between the earth and its inhabitants t
hrough his photographs in the hopes of convincing others of the necessit
y of preserving National Parks.\n\nAdams’ passion for photography and th
e American wilderness had a tremendous impact on the public perception o
f America’s wild lands\, and the art that allowed him to share its beaut
iful and inspirational landscapes with the world. Lobbying with his own
photographs as motivators for environmental protection\, Adams dedicated
himself to the untouched landscape as a spiritually redemptive power. H
e believed human beings best understood their world and themselves if se
eing themselves in proportion with\, rather than in opposition to\, natu
re.\n\nA technical master\, his revolutionary development of the zone sy
stem gave photographers more control over the resulting images than ever
before and remains a staple of photography. As one of the first and mos
t resolute believers that photography was a tool of fine art and not mer
ely a means of documentary\, he was hugely influential in the practice b
oth in its technical advancement\, and in its evolution into an establis
hed medium of fine art.\n\nIn addition to the large number of landscape
photographs\, this exhibit will also feature Adams’ talents as a portrai
t artist\, and includes candid portraits of Alfred Stieglitz\, Dorothea
Lange\, Georgia O’Keefe\, and \nothers. Like his landscapes\, his intere
st in portraiture transcended mere documentation and captured the essenc
e of the sitter’s character. Adams once said\, “To photograph truthfully
is to see beneath the surface and record the qualities of nature and hu
manity which live in all things.” Regardless of landscape or portraiture
\, the exhibition elucidates an artist who is deliberate in his practice
\, with a clear vision and a deep appreciation of the natural world. \n
\nAdams died on April 22\, 1984 at the age of 82\, four years after recei
ving the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, the highest civilian award in t
he land. Six months after his death\, Congress passed legislation \ndesi
gnating more than 200\,000 acres near Yosemite as the Ansel Adams Wilder
ness Area. A year later\, an 11\,760-foot mountain on the boundary of Yo
semite National Park was named Mt. Ansel Adams.\n\nThis private collecti
on of photographs is on loan courtesy of Lynn and Tommie Meredith. We ar
e grateful for their faithful support\, and applaud their advocacy of ed
ucation and their commitment to continue to celebrate the legacy of this
iconic photographer. The exhibition will serve as the core for the Fift
h Grade Art Experience\, which is co-sponsored by the Art Associates of
Missoula. In its 25th year\, the Art Associates of Missoula have focused
on artists providing guided tours of the exhibitions with a hands-on ex
perience for every fifth grade classroom in the county of Missoula. \n\n
It is understood that this exhibition is an educational opportunity for
art appreciators of all ages and is supported by an extensive series of
public programs including lectures by regional scholars\, panel discussi
ons\, films\, and free public tours by area artists. MAM would like to t
hank our Major Sponsor the Sierra Club and our Producing Sponsor First S
ecurity Bank. We would also like to thank the additional exhibition spon
sors: the Montana Chapter of Sierra Club\, Missoulian\, Montana Radio Co

DESCRIPTION:Haddon Hufford: Silversmith\nNovember 4\, 2011 – April 15\,
 2012\nArtist’s Reception: November 4\, 5-8 PM\nArtist’s Gallery Talk: No
vember 4\, 7 PM\n\nHaddon Hufford is a master silversmith practicing his
craft near Frenchtown\, MT. Though he has lived in the Missoula Valley
since 2006\, the Missoula Art Museum was unaware of this inimitable craf
tsman working\nwithin close proximity until Hufford submitted to the Mon
tana Triennial in 2009. We are excited to present this intimate solo exh
ibition\, HaddonHufford: Silversmith at MAM and to introduce Hufford and
his work to our visitors.\n\nHufford was born and raised in New York’s
Hudson River Valley. He studied graphic design at Parsons School of Desi
gn in Manhattan before serving in Vietnam as a combat cameraman in the A
 rmy’s 1st Air Cavalry Division\, 1969-71. Back in New York City\, Huffor
d worked twenty-eight years in the film industry as a dolly and crane gr
ip and set builder. His journey into metalsmithing began serendipitously
on a trip through Argentina in 1996. In a small village on the Pampas\,
Hufford visited a silversmith’s workshop and become fascinated with the
ancient craft. Sterling is his metal of choice because of its inherent
beauty and value but also because of the patience\, it requires to maste
r the skills for forming and forging the noble metal. Hufford says\, “I
know that the blow from the smith’s hammer is directly related to the he
art beat and rhythm of life itself. There are times in the solitude of m
y studio when hand and hammer become\none and the repetition of the over
lapping blows bring me to the point of meditation.”\n\nThe exhibition fe
atures examples of variations on common\, fine metal-smithed forms\; let
ter openers\, goblets\, and vessels. Each hand-wrought piece that Huffor
d creates is original\, he is proud to have\nnever duplicated an object.
Exploring these similar yet unique works displayed next to each other r
aises the awareness of the master silversmith’s craftsmanship\, artistic
vision and skilled design that works in unison. The exhibition includes
an example of a production piece\, a machine built maquette of a large
candelabra that Hufford designed on commission and his accompanying mech
anical drawing of the piece. It is a wonderful example of the design tha
t goes into such works. Also displayed are examples of\nthe tools of the
craft\; specialized hammers\, anvils\, and metal working stakes – many
of which are hand-made objects themselves. All of Hufford’s work is eith
er created on commission or sent to Lauren Stanley\nAmerican Silver gall
ery in New York City. This makes presenting Haddon Hufford:Silversmith i
n Missoula a special opportunity to share a distinctive craftsman.

This makes presenting Haddon Hufford:Silversmith i
n Missoula a special opportunity to share a distinctive craftsman.

omplish amazing things. Betsy Grimley and Wayne Chamberlain brought the
idea from the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. The trout images were pr

transferred to cloth by Allegra Printing and hand sewn by Martha’s Sewin

MAM would like to t

ini: We Too Like to Make drawings\, February 16\, 6-9 PM\nArtist’s Recep
tion and Gallery Talk: February 16\, 7 PM\nMaster Class with Doug Russel
l: February 18\, 12-3 PM\n\nDoug Russell is a visual artist who lives an
 d works in Laramie\, WY. His exhibition\, Confluences\, is a large\, con
cise body of work encompassing three separate series of drawings. Each s
eries explores the passage of time and cyclic changes through Russell’s
visual language of layered\, evolving marks and transparency centered on
monumental compositions. \n\nEdifice\, which comprises seven mixed medi
a works on paper\, is a literal study in time\, process and evolution. I
n continual progress since 2005\, Russell explains of the series that “t
he drawings reveal the passage of time through years of mark-making choi
ces and changes.” The final phase of the drawings\, recently realized in
2011\, was to use the architectural forms common in his recent work to
“develop and flatten the illusion of space”. Empire is a series of eight
drawings that employ pencil\, ink\, graphite and China marker on Mylar
 \, a semi-translucent surface that seems made for Russell’s intricate\, l
ayered marks. Of the Empire works the artist states\, “they are explorat
ions of improvised gestural drawings of imagined monumental architectura
l forms.” Where the Edifice series reveals years of marks from Russell’s
enveloping style\, Empire gives the viewer the foundation of his most r
ecent series of refined\, colossal drawings. Ebb and Flow is a series of
twelve large drawings completed in 2010 and 2011. The works range in si
 ze from 40 inches by 25 inches\, to a large-scale installation– a monume
ntal drawing of quiet\, chaotic decay and slow\, organic re-growth\, lar
ger than eight feet square. Ebb and Flow is Russell’s “reflection of [hi
s] perception of the compression of history\, culture\, and time” - and
indeed these imagined\, compressed civilizations are marvelous worlds un
to themselves.\n\nMAM is excited to introduce Missoula to Doug Russell w
ith this exhibition of original drawings. More often than not\, drawing
is used as a tool by artists to explore ideas that are later formalized
in other media\, be it painting\, sculpture or printmaking. Russell\, on
the other hand\, readily absorbs the influences from these media to edu
cate his visual investigation and inform his visual language while remai
ning rooted in the traditions of drawing. The body of work exhibited in
Doug Russell: Confluences leaves no doubt\nthat drawing is a powerful an
d beautiful medium on its own.

We would also like to thank the additional exhibition spon
sors: the Montana Chapter of Sierra Club\, Missoulian\, Montana Radio Co
mpany\, Lamar Advertising\, Missoula Public Library\, and Rocky Mountain

tion and Gallery Talk: February 16\, 7 PM\nMaster Class with Doug Russel
l: February 18\, 12-3 PM\n\nDoug Russell is a visual artist who lives an
 d works in Laramie\, WY.

DESCRIPTION:Self–Taught and Art Brut in the MAM Permanent Collection\nOc
 tober 7\, 2011 – March 18\, 2012\n\nMAM presents several acquisitions to
the Permanent Collection to help reacquaint visitors with the variety a
nd depth of ideas and approaches to art found in our collection vault. T
he drawings of Steve Muhs\, acquisitioned from his recent MAM exhibition
\, join with local favorites Elizabeth Dilbeck and Lew Foster.\n\nAs mod
ernist artists tired of and rejected academic styles\, they sought inspi
ration in art forms outside the realm of official culture. In the 19th c
entury\, artists found refreshing and invigorating creative works consid
ered exotic or primitive\, such as masks from the continent of Africa\,
prints from Japan\, or the\nmedieval and folk arts found throughout Euro
pe. An interest in the art of insane asylum inmates grew in the 1920’s.
\n\nThe post war French artist Jean Dubuffet was especially interested i
n these works\, coining the term Art Brut. The more common term used in
the United States is “Outsider Art\,” coined by art critic Roger Cardina
l in 1972.\n\nEach of the artists in this small exhibit are difficult to
categorize\, emphasizing the broadness of the category\, and the wide v
ariety of styles and approaches. Steve Muhs is more appropriately\ndescr
ibed as re-taught\, shrugging off and overcoming his formal art training
with no fear of his own personal vision and voice. Elizabeth Dilbeck is
a visually impaired painter—her eyesight deterioration started at the a
ge of seven—and paints instinctually from memories of colors and images.
Lew Foster is\na developmentally disabled gentleman that creates compel
ling and joyful artworks\, taking advantage of Opportunity Resources’ wo
nderful art programs. \n\nCommon to each artist\, and regardless of how
they arrived there\, is an obsessive need to create\, to express somethi
ng from deep within and beyond the constraints and interference of\, as
Dubuffet said\, competition\, acclaim\, and social promotion. Please enj
oy the raw humor\, the provocative fearlessness\, and the liberating aut
henticity of these compelling and sincere artworks.
