Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are

Missoula Art Museum
335 North Pattee
Missoula, MT 59802
Ongoing through Wednesday, April 28, 2010

MAM is pleased to host a homecoming for this native Montana artist. The recently created enamel and resin paintings present an elaborate blend of visual references, using the landscape as the foundation for his pictorial space. The imagery alludes to the glorified natural landscapes depicted in turn of the century photographic postcards. In a process oriented approach, representations of these landmarks are abstracted and distilled into essential areas of color.

Art in the American West has a rich tradition informed by the landscape. Williams plays off of the tradition established as a consequence of European influence on American art. From the Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty to the Western painters C.M. Russell and Frederick Remington, artists have attempted to put down on canvas their romantic interpretations of nature and their visions of a vanishing frontier. However, Williams departs from these traditions, and his attention to craftsmanship and editorial abstraction are characteristics unmistakably his own.

Griff Williams, The Rest Follows.Williams states, "At the heart of all my paintings is the landscape as I grew to know in Montana. I use the land as a subject and metaphor. There is a centuries old tradition of mythologizing the land in both painting and photography. My work has sought to address this." Williams' methodology involves an elaborate paint by number process he reinvented. Each segmented area of the composition is numerically assigned to a specific color, a limited palette professionally mixed to replicate the distinctive colors in a 1950's Color Craft paint by numbers set. The hand-made application involves repeated layers of poured transparent resin and stenciled enamel shapes. At first glance, this meticulous process is belied by the graphic flatness and slick surfaces of the work, which may initially seem manufactured or digital. Williams presents an extravagant visionary experience, a blend of the material and the optical. This calculated technique speaks to us of setting aside the romanticism of the past. Collectively, these abstracted landscapes serve as metaphors. The land that has inspired us for so long pays tribute to the reverence for nature that still exists. Many American landscape painters' expressions are rooted in American cultural transcendentalism. There is a belief that the land will always be, yet the winds of art, the swirling pigments, and words will never be able to completely describe nor reflect its glorious existence. Thankfully, Williams presents us with an entirely new and unique vision, and from this we can appreciate that land will continue to provide fodder for inspiration long into the future.

Williams, born in Montana, received his Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco Art Institute in 1993 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Montana in 1989. He lives and works in San Francisco where he has owned and operated Gallery 16 since 1994.

Related Events:

Artini: Peaks, March 18, 5:30-9 pm

Artist Reception and Gallery Talk: March 18, 6 pm

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org…

Marilyn Lysohir: Good Girls1968

Missoula Art Museum
335 North Pattee
Missoula, MT 59802
Ongoing through Sunday, May 30, 2010

Artist Reception and Gallery Talk: March 5, 5-8 pm

Good Girls 1968 is an installation that consists of over 160 ceramic portraits of young women with whom Marilyn Lysohir graduated from high school. The installation involved reconnecting through hours on the phone with many of the girls captured in the portraits.

Lysohir is a renowned ceramicist and although Good Girls 1968 is grounded and created from one person's point of view, this exhibition transcends the personal and discovers its impact while touching the audience's cultural memory and reminiscences.

Lysohir lives and works in Moscow, ID, and has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art at Washington State University and is co-owner of Cowgirl Chocolates. She has exhibited throughout the United States and has been an Artist in Residence and Visiting Artist at the Kohler Foundation, Kansas City Art Institute, and Kent State University.

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org…

Donna Loos: Silhouette Series

Missoula Art Museum
Sunday, March 7, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

Backyard Tire Fire w/ special guest Tom Catmull & The Clerics

Top Hat Lounge
134 West Front Street
Missoula, MT 59802-4304
Sunday, March 7, 2010, 8pm

Backyard Tire Fire, based in Bloomington, Illinois, have worked the national circuit tirelessly, sharing stages with fellow-travelers Cracker, the Reverend Horton Heat, Govt. Mule, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry and Los Lobos. BTF plans to be on the road fulltime in 2010, beginning with a 50 market national tour that they'll be headlining from February through May in support of their fifth full-length disc, Good To Be, set for release on Feb 16.

Like their aromatic namesake, Backyard Tire Fire have grown from a smoldering, localized slow burn to an insistent, overriding funky presence that's spreading and refuses to be snuffed or ignored.

Don't miss BTF in Missoula on Sunday, March 7 with special guest Tom Catmull and The Clerics opening the show.

Well-placed friends have emerged on the field of battle; Jim Heath (a/k/a the Rev. Horton Heat) called BTF "one of the best and coolest bands out there."

Cracker's Johnny Hickman added, "My favorite band right now is Backyard Tire Fire; they sometimes remind me of early Wilco, Son Volt and Flaming Lips—they are my earworm these last few months."

Jimbo Mathus of Squirrel Nut Zippers is a big fan, and Govt. Mule's Warren Haynes invited BTF to his 2009 Xmas Jam festival.

Special Thanks to The Trail 103.3 FM and MissoulaEvents.net.

More info: www.jambase.com…

Donna Loos: Silhouette Series

Missoula Art Museum
Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

Mission Mountain Audubon Meeting

Polson City Lib. Comm. meeting Room
Tuesday, March 9, 2010, 7 – 8pm

"Peregrine Falcons of Flathead Lake" by Byron Crow will be the next evening program of the Mission Mountain Audubon Society on Tuesday, 9 March at 7 pm in the Polson City Library Meeting Room. Everyone is welcome.

The recovery of the Peregrine Falcon is one of the most celebrated success stories in the history of North American conservation. Once endangered due to pesticides such as DDT, the fastest bird in the world is also one of the most studied birds in the world. Yet ongoing research on a particular nest above Flathead Lake is revealing new insights about this amazing falcon.

These surprising revelations, however, haven't come easy. But overcoming the demanding physical challenges- including technical climbing and harsh weather conditions- as well as solving serious technological problems over 3 years of intense observation is beginning to pay off. Byron will provide an overview of his innovative research with a special focus on the dietary selections of prey species made by the falcons of Flathead Lake.

Byron Crow is a wildlife biologist with the Montana Raptor Institute for Research and Education.

Missoula Art Museum
335 North Pattee
Missoula, MT 59802
Thursday, March 11, 2010, 4 – 6pm

Art Guide Volunteers Needed

This past autumn over 1000 fifth graders visited MAM for the 23rd annual Fifth Grade Art Experience. Tours were facilitated by over 20 dedicated art guides (docents) who volunteered over a three month period to lead groups of students through the exhibits. Art guides are an essential part of MAM’s educational mission to make contemporary art accessible to all who step foot in the museum. Though the fifth grade art experience is over for the year, school and community groups will continue to visit as MAM continues to present high quality and stimulating exhibitions. Art guides are needed throughout the year to help with these visitors as well as with our Saturday 20 minute tours. If you are interested in becoming an art guide please come to the trainings listed below or call Renee Taaffe, education curator, to set up an appointment. All art guides, experienced and new are encouraged to take part in the following trainings:

ART GUIDE TRAININGS:

Thursday, March 11, 4-6 pm: Review Marilyn Lysohir, Griff Williams

Thursday, April 8, 4-6 pm: Review Kevin Red Star

Marilyn Lysohir: Good Girls1968

Missoula Art Museum
335 North Pattee
Missoula, MT 59802
Friday, March 12 – Sunday, June 6, 2010

Friday, March 12, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are

Missoula Art Museum
335 North Pattee
Missoula, MT 59802
Saturday, March 13 – Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Breastfeeding - Prepare and Succeed!

1900 S Reserve St.
Missoula, MT 59801
Monday, March 15, 2010, 6:30 – 9pm

Expectant parents will learn the how's and why's of breastfeeding and practice (with a doll!) proper breastfeeding positions. You'll get bottle-feeding tips, and learn ways that dads and grandparents can help in addition to learning how to prevent and treat common problems. The class is taught by a lactation consultant so you'll know where to turn if you need further help once the baby arrives. Parents will view different breast pumps, nursing bras, and other nursing necessities. This is a great opportunity to decrease anxiety about feeding your new baby before the big day comes.

Cost is $60 for the 2-2 ½ hour class. Both private and group classes are available, call 406.721.5440 for times and dates for either and to register.

More info: www.nursingnook.net…
