DESCRIPTION:Haddon Hufford: Silversmith\nNovember 4\, 2011 – April 15\,
 2012\nArtist’s Reception: November 4\, 5-8 PM\nArtist’s Gallery Talk: No
vember 4\, 7 PM\n\nHaddon Hufford is a master silversmith practicing his
craft near Frenchtown\, MT. Though he has lived in the Missoula Valley
since 2006\, the Missoula Art Museum was unaware of this inimitable craf
tsman working\nwithin close proximity until Hufford submitted to the Mon
tana Triennial in 2009. We are excited to present this intimate solo exh
ibition\, HaddonHufford: Silversmith at MAM and to introduce Hufford and
his work to our visitors.\n\nHufford was born and raised in New York’s
Hudson River Valley. He studied graphic design at Parsons School of Desi
gn in Manhattan before serving in Vietnam as a combat cameraman in the A
 rmy’s 1st Air Cavalry Division\, 1969-71. Back in New York City\, Huffor
d worked twenty-eight years in the film industry as a dolly and crane gr
ip and set builder. His journey into metalsmithing began serendipitously
on a trip through Argentina in 1996. In a small village on the Pampas\,
Hufford visited a silversmith’s workshop and become fascinated with the
ancient craft. Sterling is his metal of choice because of its inherent
beauty and value but also because of the patience\, it requires to maste
r the skills for forming and forging the noble metal. Hufford says\, “I
know that the blow from the smith’s hammer is directly related to the he
art beat and rhythm of life itself. There are times in the solitude of m
y studio when hand and hammer become\none and the repetition of the over
lapping blows bring me to the point of meditation.”\n\nThe exhibition fe
atures examples of variations on common\, fine metal-smithed forms\; let
ter openers\, goblets\, and vessels. Each hand-wrought piece that Huffor
d creates is original\, he is proud to have\nnever duplicated an object.
Exploring these similar yet unique works displayed next to each other r
aises the awareness of the master silversmith’s craftsmanship\, artistic
vision and skilled design that works in unison. The exhibition includes
an example of a production piece\, a machine built maquette of a large
candelabra that Hufford designed on commission and his accompanying mech
anical drawing of the piece. It is a wonderful example of the design tha
t goes into such works. Also displayed are examples of\nthe tools of the
craft\; specialized hammers\, anvils\, and metal working stakes – many
of which are hand-made objects themselves. All of Hufford’s work is eith
er created on commission or sent to Lauren Stanley\nAmerican Silver gall
ery in New York City. This makes presenting Haddon Hufford:Silversmith i
n Missoula a special opportunity to share a distinctive craftsman.

DESCRIPTION:MAM Collections: The Parade Route\nSeptember 7\, 2011 – Febr
 uary 13\, 2012\n\nThroughout history\, artists have seen parades\, circu
ses\, and other strange spectacles as sources of both empathy and inspir
ation. This was especially true in the last century when modernists such
  as Picasso\, Chagall\, Klee\, Kandinsky\, and Calder used parades and c
ircuses as source material in their work. Such processions and gathering
s\, marchings and minglings\, protestings and celebratings occur for man
 y reasons\, providing a rich world of metaphor\, psychology\, and observ
ation.\n\nWe perused the collection with this in mind\, keeping a keen e
ye on ways in which local artists have seen the gathering of people as s
ource and message material for their own work. In the collection vault w
e found Stan Healy’s voyeuristic documentations of parades and gathering
s from the detachment of staff photographer\, to the overtly political c
ommentaries of Marvin Messing\, Sheila Miles\, and Jim Todd. We found th
e psychological explorations of Mary Ryan and Kathy Shiroki\, and the fr
enetic and desperate energies displayed in the works of Jay Rummel and W
alter Piehl.\n\nBut undeniably\, parades and other festive events bring
out the voyeur in us all. Entranced by the color\, pageantry\, and weird
ness we find ourselves either outside observing a strange or menacing mo
b\, or invited to join the comfort of a celebratory or purposeful throng
.\n\nMAM is proud to maintain a collection presence throughout its exhib

t to celebrate that these outstanding artworks are held in trust for the

DESCRIPTION:Self–Taught and Art Brut in the MAM Permanent Collection\nOc
 tober 7\, 2011 – March 18\, 2012\n\nMAM presents several acquisitions to
the Permanent Collection to help reacquaint visitors with the variety a
nd depth of ideas and approaches to art found in our collection vault. T
he drawings of Steve Muhs\, acquisitioned from his recent MAM exhibition
\, join with local favorites Elizabeth Dilbeck and Lew Foster.\n\nAs mod
ernist artists tired of and rejected academic styles\, they sought inspi
ration in art forms outside the realm of official culture. In the 19th c
entury\, artists found refreshing and invigorating creative works consid
ered exotic or primitive\, such as masks from the continent of Africa\,
prints from Japan\, or the\nmedieval and folk arts found throughout Euro
pe. An interest in the art of insane asylum inmates grew in the 1920’s.
\n\nThe post war French artist Jean Dubuffet was especially interested in
these works\, coining the term Art Brut. The more common term used in t
he United States is “Outsider Art\,” coined by art critic Roger Cardinal
in 1972.\n\nEach of the artists in this small exhibit are difficult to
categorize\, emphasizing the broadness of the category\, and the wide va
riety of styles and approaches. Steve Muhs is more appropriately\ndescri
bed as re-taught\, shrugging off and overcoming his formal art training
with no fear of his own personal vision and voice. Elizabeth Dilbeck is
a visually impaired painter—her eyesight deterioration started at the ag
e of seven—and paints instinctually from memories of colors and images.
Lew Foster is\na developmentally disabled gentleman that creates compell
ing and joyful artworks\, taking advantage of Opportunity Resources’ won
derful art programs.\n\nCommon to each artist\, and regardless of how th
ey arrived there\, is an obsessive need to create\, to express something
from deep within and beyond the constraints and interference of\, as Du
buffet said\, competition\, acclaim\, and social promotion. Please enjoy
the raw humor\, the provocative fearlessness\, and the liberating authe

Please enjoy
the raw humor\, the provocative fearlessness\, and the liberating authe
nticity of these compelling and sincere artworks.

e Chamberlain brought the idea from the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman
. The trout images were provided by Joseph Tomelleri and Montana Trout U

and sewn by Martha's Sewing Ministries. The fish are 'swimming' in a 'p

teer Dave Kendall. Angler girls and boys will use fishing poles to catch
the fish from a bridge\, designed and built by artisan builder Tim Back

Please enjoy
the raw humor\, the provocative fearlessness\, and the liberating authe
nticity of these compelling and sincere artworks.

Please enjoy
the raw humor\, the provocative fearlessness\, and the liberating authe
nticity of these compelling and sincere artworks.
