DESCRIPTION:“Death is a personal thing\, a deep family tragedy.”\nIn Mis
soula\, the fourth largest community\, the city’s hospitals were overwhe
lmed. The city and county officials struggled to deal with the outbreak
. The community was desperate.\nAccording to historical documents the “S
panish Influenza” epidemic of 1918 was the most virulent flu epidemic in
history. It killed more than 5\,000 in Montana\, more than 650\,000 in
the United States\, and an incredible twenty to fifty million died world
wide. \nAt the same time the flu was taking its toll\, America was stil
l engaged in World War I. These two catastrophic events impacted the liv
es of many with devastating consequences.\nNot only did the flu claim ma
ny civilian lives but the military was hit hard also. Some speculated th
ey might be victims of biological warfare because Germany had already in
troduced chemical warfare in Europe. This was a time of turbulence and s
uspicion\, and none more so than in Montana.\nWhen asked why she chose t
his as a theme for the spring exhibit\, L. Jane Richards\, Senior Curato
r/Assistant Director of the Museum said\, “I chose this theme because of
its historical impact. The exhibit demonstrates the way science has tre
ated the flu over the years since 1918. It’s also about how the war chan
ged America and how its politics still affects us today.”

DESCRIPTION:Internationally known artist Anne Appleby will be featured i
n the Lynda M. Frost Contemporary American Indian Art Gallery from July
7 through November 22. Appleby'€™s luminous\, oil and wax paintings comm
unicate through the formal language of color-field abstraction. Taking t
he viewer beyond this initial reference\, the artist transforms what at
a glance appear to be monochromatic panels\, revealing subtly enlivened
surfaces with incandescent layers of muted color. Each painting has been
built up through many applications of varied translucent tones. \n\n\n
The exhibition will showcase several important early works\, accentuatin
g the development and approach of this celebrated artist. Appleby’s wo
rk has always been reductive of and clearly inspired by the natural worl
 d. This natural inspiration speaks directly to her Native American herit
age. MAM is proud this exhibition\, which celebrates the gift of works t
hat the artist has made to MAM. \n\n\nAppleby received her BFA from The
University of Montana and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
She has been the recipient of many prestigious grants and awards\, inclu
ding a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation\, a SECA Art Award from
the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, and a Western States Art Feder
 ation award.

DESCRIPTION:Reception and Gallery Talk with Ray Campeau: September 4\, 5
-8 pm\n\nTen years following his death in 2008\, the Freeman Butts estat
e\ngenerously offered to gift a selection of his work to six institution
s\nin the state of Montana. Those institutions\, including MAM\, met sev
eral\ntimes with the trustee of the estate and made selections from the
estate\nto better reflect Butts' work already in their collections. This
rich\ngifting of works is intended to more fully frame the artist's leg
acy\nwithin the state. The institutions involved acknowledged no single
\ninstitution in the state had the space or resources to accommodate the
\nvoluminous amount of Butts' work. Therefore\, all six institutions\nsel
ected works to fill out their collections\, made a commitment to\nfeatur
e the work\, and generated scholarship about Butts' influence. All\nsix
institutions agreed to lend and borrow the work with each other to\nfurt
her educate the public of the legacy of this important Montana\npainter.
We are deeply grateful to Ray Campeau\, Butts' longtime friend\,\nin he

DESCRIPTION:Paul Harris\, born in 1925 in Orlando\, FL\, is best known a
s a sculptor and throughout his career he has employed almost every scul
ptural medium and process. From his plaster explorations of the human fo
rm while in graduate school in New Mexico in the late 1940's\, to his th
ought-provoking and ephemeral experimental works of the 1950's utilizing
plaster\, papier-mache and string\, to his marriage of high art and dom
estic craft in the stuffed and stitched cloth sculptures of the 1960's\,
Harris' aesthetic remains one of constant exploration. His drawings and
prints act in the same manner as his sculptures: background meshes free
ly with subject\, each part functioning as both formal and narrative ele
ments resulting in a solid look at simple relationships\, where everythi
ng boldly stands for itself.\n\nIn 1969\, Harris received a fellowship f
rom the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles and while there
created the Shut-in Suite. Harris states\, "I lived alone in a rundown
LA apartment amidst my own disorder. I had not intended to make a Shut-i
n Suite . . . there was just no time to go out into the world. I shuttl
ed between the apartment and the print center for three months. At the e
nd of the second month I realized that my world was first\, a crummy apa
rtment and second\, my imagination." Harris' crisp images in the Shut-in
Suite are still-lifes seen through a zoom lens with views cropped and f
lattened. In some cases single objects are the focus\, assuming an iconi
c character\, like the lamp in Left a Light On. In others\, the combina
tion of flat patterns and implied dimensions causes imagery to shift bet
ween an abstract and a representational identity\, as in Lawn Party. To
achieve the unusual effects found in the Shut-in Suite\, Harris drew on
the stone\, aluminum\, or zinc plates using a combination of lithographi
c pencil\, Harris Triple Ink\, asphaltum\, and lithotine. Harris also in
troduced collage elements of hand-cut self-adhesive foil and vinyl.\n\nT
he Missoula Art Museum would like to thank Nicholas Harris\, son of Paul
\, who generously donated these ten prints from The Shut-in Suite to our
permanent collection in honor of Bob and Gennie DeWeese.

DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20091115

X-MICROSOFT-CDO-ALLDAYEVENT:TRUE
DESCRIPTION:Artist Scott Fife has long been obsessed with the\nhistoric
characters that helped shape the time we live in\; characters\nthat have
often fallen into the dark recesses of history. Through his\nre-creatio
ns\, Fife offers us a renewed perspective reminding us of the\nfamous qu
ote by George Santayana\, "Those who cannot remember the past\nare conde
mned to repeat it."\n\nOne such historic event with national impact\, an
d the focus of this\nexhibition\, was the assassination of Idaho Governo
r Frank Steunenberg in\n1905. The murder occurred in Caldwell\, ID\, and
the subsequent trial in\n1907 was held in Boise\, ID. Although this tra
gic drama was played out\nover a century ago\, its relevance today must
not be understated. The\nstory of a small town in a small state\, thrust
into a national spotlight\nas a consequence of unrest associated with t
he extractive industries\, is\nnot lost on a Montana audience. Montanans
too\, have a long history that\nhas borne witness to the consequences o
f labor's upheaval and industry's\nselfish acts. Much of this historical
labor drama was played out again\nand again and then set aside\, out of
the spotlight\, forgotten\, to fade\ninto the recesses of our collectiv
 e memory.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of photographs from\nth
e larger body of work Tamura has generated over the past decade.\nTamura
\, the daughter of second generation Japanese Americans\, was born and r
aised in Nampa\, Idaho\, a small town just a two hour drive from the rem
nants of the Minidoka Relocation Center. Though growing up in Idaho\, in
such close proximity\, she was never told of the internment camp\; firs
t learning of Minidoka in 1978\, in journalism school\, at Idaho State U
niversity.\n\nIn 2001\, Tamura heard artist Roger Shimomura lecture abou
t his paintings based on the journals his grandmother kept while interne
d at Minidoka. Tamura\, like Shimomura\, was inspired to depict a sense
of the place and the life of internment at Minidoka. Her images\, captur
ed on black and white infrared film\, accentuate the stark landscape and
architectural remains of the camp while lending a timeless quality to t
he photographs. The present day portraits of internees are honest and hu
man. Tamura's eye for composition\, honed over twenty years as a photojo
urnalist\, unites her unique photographic vision with persistent honesty
that is both personal and universal.

DESCRIPTION:With the weather change from the heat of summer to the crisp
cold of winter\, wildlife behavior also changes. One no longer needs to
be up at the crack of dawn to catch sight of deer or elk. Except during
storms\, animals will be up and about at any time throughout the short
winter days. So it is a great time to visit your favorite National Wildl
ife Refuge\, such as the National Bison Range in Moiese.\n\nThe Refuge i
 s open daily\, from 7 a.m. to dark\, which can come as early at 5 p.m. d
uring the middle of winter. The Winter Drive provides a 10-mile round tr
ip along a gravel road and it is open daily\, weather and road condition
s permitting\, of course. This route offers wildlife viewing opportuniti
es for bison\, white-tail deer\, elk\, pronghorn antelope and bald eagle
along Mission Creek and in Alexander Basin. There are spectacular views
of the Mission Mountains from the Basin. Visitors may also take the sho
rter West Loop Drive and find deer\, pronghorn or other wildlife. We sug
gest people give themselves about an hour to do the drives so they can g
o slowly enough to enjoy the wildlife and scenery. As the season advance
s\, roads may become snowy and/or icy\, so use caution when driving. No
fees are charged during the winter season.\n\nAnother good spot for view
ing bison and sometimes elk is along the south side of the Range along H
ighway 93 north of Ravalli. Or\, check out the southwest side along High
way 200 and look for bighorn sheep among the cliffs and rocks.\n\nIf the
weather cooperates\, try walking the Nature Trail located in the Day Us
e Area. This short\, 1-mile\, accessible trail is a good place to see wi
nter birds\, such as black–capped chickadees\, northern flickers and Tow
 nsend’s solitaires.\n\nIf you are interested in birds\, spend a little e
xtra time and drive north along Highway 212 to Ninepipe National Wildlif
e Refuge. When there is open water in the reservoir\, this is an excelle
nt place to see geese and other waterfowl. Also look for rough-legged ha
wks\, birds which choose to winter in the Mission Valley. Please remembe
r\, for your safety and the protection of wildlife\, walking away from y
our vehicle is prohibited on these National Wildlife Refuges except for
the designated areas.\n\nVisitor Center hours at the National Bison Rang
e are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays. Stop by to view the displays and
watch the 15-minute video. Staff will be available to answer questions a
nd direct you to the drives\, trails and activities. And the Christmas B
ook Sale will be held the entire month of December. All items will be 25
% off regular price at the Glacier Association bookstore. Although the d
rives are open daily\, the Center is closed weekends and holidays. And d
uring the holidays\, the Visitor Center will be closed for Thanksgiving
(Thursday and Friday\, November 26 and 27)\, Christmas (Friday\, Decembe
 r 25) and New Year’s Day (Friday\, January 1). Please call 406/644-2211
for up-to-date information\, road conditions and Visitor Center hours.\n
\nSo\, take advantage of those short but nice winter days - or even the
not-so-nice days - by visiting the National Bison Range. The wildlife is
waiting.\n\nThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal

DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20091116

Much of this historical
labor drama was played out again\nand again and then set aside\, out of
the spotlight\, forgotten\, to fade\ninto the recesses of our collectiv
 e memory.

Much of this historical
labor drama was played out again\nand again and then set aside\, out of
the spotlight\, forgotten\, to fade\ninto the recesses of our collectiv
 e memory.

X-MICROSOFT-CDO-ALLDAYEVENT:FALSE
Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal

hree largest sectors of UM carbon dioxide emissions: purchased electrici
ty\, transportation and energy on campus from the steam co-generator. \n
\nIn 2007 UM President George Dennison signed the American College and U
niversity Presidents Climate Commitment\, dedicating UM to reducing its
carbon emissions. Last year UM achieved several milestones toward that g
oal. The University completed its first-ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory\,
created the Office of Sustainability and hired a full-time sustainabilit
y coordinator\, Cherie Peacock. Peacock's primary focus has been to draf
t the University's Climate Action Plan. \n\nInformation about the plan a
nd the University's sustainability efforts is on the Greening UM Web sit
 e.
