"Dreamers and Dust"

The University Center Art Gallery
UM Campus
Missoula, MT
Sunday, March 14, 2010

The University Center Art Gallery will display the photographs of Hamilton native Evan Caughey from Monday, Feb. 22, through Friday, March 26, in an exhibition titled "Dreamers and Dust."

An opening reception and artist talk will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the gallery, which is located in UC Room 227. The event is free and open to the public.

"Dreamers and Dust" documents Caughey's intense fascination with the everyday lives of people he observed while traveling in India. His photographs capture hope and despair, youth and old age, success and failure, and the need for -- or repulsion from -- living a life that fits within the constraints of society.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are

Missoula Art Museum
Missoula, MT
Sunday, March 14, 2010

MAM is pleased to host a homecoming for this native Montana artist. The recently created enamel and resin paintings present an elaborate blend of visual references, using the landscape as the foundation for his pictorial space. The imagery alludes to the glorified natural landscapes depicted in turn of the century photographic postcards. In a process oriented approach, representations of these landmarks are abstracted and distilled into essential areas of color.

Art in the American West has a rich tradition informed by the landscape. Williams plays off of the tradition established as a consequence of European influence on American art. From the Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty to the Western painters C.M. Russell and Frederick Remington, artists have attempted to put down on canvas their romantic interpretations of nature and their visions of a vanishing frontier. However, Williams departs from these traditions, and his attention to craftsmanship and editorial abstraction are characteristics unmistakably his own.

Griff Williams, The Rest Follows.Williams states, "At the heart of all my paintings is the landscape as I grew to know in Montana. I use the land as a subject and metaphor. There is a centuries old tradition of mythologizing the land in both painting and photography. My work has sought to address this." Williams' methodology involves an elaborate paint by number process he reinvented. Each segmented area of the composition is numerically assigned to a specific color, a limited palette professionally mixed to replicate the distinctive colors in a 1950's Color Craft paint by numbers set. The hand-made application involves repeated layers of poured transparent resin and stenciled enamel shapes. At first glance, this meticulous process is belied by the graphic flatness and slick surfaces of the work, which may initially seem manufactured or digital. Williams presents an extravagant visionary experience, a blend of the material and the optical. This calculated technique speaks to us of setting aside the romanticism of the past. Collectively, these abstracted landscapes serve as metaphors. The land that has inspired us for so long pays tribute to the reverence for nature that still exists. Many American landscape painters' expressions are rooted in American cultural transcendentalism. There is a belief that the land will always be, yet the winds of art, the swirling pigments, and words will never be able to completely describe nor reflect its glorious existence. Thankfully, Williams presents us with an entirely new and unique vision, and from this we can appreciate that land will continue to provide fodder for inspiration long into the future.

Williams, born in Montana, received his Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco Art Institute in 1993 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Montana in 1989. He lives and works in San Francisco where he has owned and operated Gallery 16 since 1994.

Marilyn Lysohir: Good Girls1968

Missoula Art Museum
Missoula, MT
Sunday, March 14, 2010

Good Girls 1968 is an installation that consists of over 160 ceramic portraits of young women with whom Marilyn Lysohir graduated from high school. The installation involved reconnecting through hours on the phone with many of the girls captured in the portraits.

Lysohir is a renowned ceramicist and although Good Girls 1968 is grounded and created from one person's point of view, this exhibition transcends the personal and discovers its impact while touching the audience's cultural memory and reminiscences.
Like many of Lysohir's ceramic works, her disciplined research paid off. In August of 2008, Lysohir installed these ceramic portraits at her high school in Sharon, PA for her 40th class reunion. Many of the "girls" came to the opening and Lysohir had the opportunity to share memories and revisit the past.

The 1960's was a period of great change in U.S. history. In particular, 1968 marked a year that many consider a pinnacle of cultural revolution and turmoil in the United States. That year saw America embroiled in Vietnam with both the Tet Offensive and the My Lai massacre, the capture of the U.S.S. Pueblo, George Wallace's third party candidacy, vocalization about the use of nuclear weapons, the release of the Beatle's White Album, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Andy Warhol was shot, Walter Cronkite openly criticize the U.S. Policy in Vietnam, the musical Hair open in London, Robert Kennedy's campaign and assassination, Chicago's police crack down at the Democratic Convention, the Mexico City Riots, Women's Liberation movement and "bra-burning", the launch of Apollo 7 and Apollo 8, the black power salute at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Jacqueline Kennedy marry Aristotle Onassis, the U.S. repeal the Gold Standard, Rowen and Martin's Laugh-In air, student protests intensify, the U.S. Scorpion Nuclear Submarine sink with 99 men on board, the United Auto Workers separate from the AFL CIO, Ringo Starr quit The Beatles, and Richard Nixon rise to power and his election to President. Layered on top of all of these events, were the changing attitudes associated with religion, sex, marriage, and drug use. In so many ways, 1968 served as a watershed year when a heavy dose of realism thrust a dagger into the heart of a fairy tale past. There was no turning back after 1968, and the collective cultural conscience of the country was never the same.

While Lysohir captures a snap shot in her life, we soon discover that these faces transcend Sharon, PA, and capture a time when many cultural doors were closed and others opened. The nature of the work touches each of us through the association of our own reunions, reminiscences, memories, and acceptances of those doors both opened and closed.

Lysohir states, "My work is inspired by my family and my friends and the working class milieu in which I grew up. When I begin a piece I start with a personal idea -such as the death of my grandmother or my father surviving World War II, and then this idea evolves into a formal composition which usually takes me a long time to work out. So for me, as an artist, any piece is about communication and memory, and documenting the journey upon which all humans embark...from birth to death."

Lysohir lives and works in Moscow, ID, and has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art at Washington State University and is co-owner of Cowgirl Chocolates. She has exhibited throughout the United States and has been an Artist in Residence and Visiting Artist at the Kohler Foundation, Kansas City Art Institute, and Kent State University.

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

Winter Wildlife Season at the National Bison Range

National Bison Range
Moiese, Mt
Sunday, March 14, 2010, 7am – 5pm

With the weather change from the heat of summer to the crisp cold of winter, wildlife behavior also changes. One no longer needs to be up at the crack of dawn to catch sight of deer or elk. Except during storms, animals will be up and about at any time throughout the short winter days. So it is a great time to visit your favorite National Wildlife Refuge, such as the National Bison Range in Moiese.

The Refuge is open daily, from 7 a.m. to dark, which can come as early at 5 p.m. during the middle of winter. The Winter Drive provides a 10-mile round trip along a gravel road and it is open daily, weather and road conditions permitting, of course. This route offers wildlife viewing opportunities for bison, white-tail deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and bald eagle along Mission Creek and in Alexander Basin. There are spectacular views of the Mission Mountains from the Basin. Visitors may also take the shorter West Loop Drive and find deer, pronghorn or other wildlife. We suggest people give themselves about an hour to do the drives so they can go slowly enough to enjoy the wildlife and scenery. As the season advances, roads may become snowy and/or icy, so use caution when driving. No fees are charged during the winter season.

Another good spot for viewing bison and sometimes elk is along the south side of the Range along Highway 93 north of Ravalli. Or, check out the southwest side along Highway 200 and look for bighorn sheep among the cliffs and rocks.

If the weather cooperates, try walking the Nature Trail located in the Day Use Area. This short, 1-mile, accessible trail is a good place to see winter birds, such as black–capped chickadees, northern flickers and Townsend’s solitaires.

If you are interested in birds, spend a little extra time and drive north along Highway 212 to Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. When there is open water in the reservoir, this is an excellent place to see geese and other waterfowl. Also look for rough-legged hawks, birds which choose to winter in the Mission Valley. Please remember, for your safety and the protection of wildlife, walking away from your vehicle is prohibited on these National Wildlife Refuges except for the designated areas.

Visitor Center hours at the National Bison Range are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays. Stop by to view the displays and watch the 15-minute video. Staff will be available to answer questions and direct you to the drives, trails and activities. And the Christmas Book Sale will be held the entire month of December. All items will be 25% off regular price at the Glacier Association bookstore. Although the drives are open daily, the Center is closed weekends and holidays. And during the holidays, the Visitor Center will be closed for Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27), Christmas (Friday, December 25) and New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1). Please call 406/644-2211 for up-to-date information, road conditions and Visitor Center hours.

So, take advantage of those short but nice winter days - or even the not-so-nice days - by visiting the National Bison Range. The wildlife is waiting.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

More info: www.fws.gov…

Donna Loos: Silhouette Series

Missoula Art Museum
Sunday, March 14, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

"Dreamers and Dust"

The University Center Art Gallery
UM Campus
Missoula, MT
Monday, March 15, 2010

The University Center Art Gallery will display the photographs of Hamilton native Evan Caughey from Monday, Feb. 22, through Friday, March 26, in an exhibition titled "Dreamers and Dust."

An opening reception and artist talk will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the gallery, which is located in UC Room 227. The event is free and open to the public.

"Dreamers and Dust" documents Caughey's intense fascination with the everyday lives of people he observed while traveling in India.
Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are

Missoula Art Museum
Missoula, MT
Monday, March 15, 2010

Monday, March 15, 2010

Moiese, Mt
Monday, March 15, 2010, 7am – 5pm

Monday, March 15, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

Breastfeeding - Prepare and Succeed!

1900 S Reserve St.
Missoula, MT 59801
Monday, March 15, 2010, 6:30 – 9pm

Expectant parents will learn the how's and why's of breastfeeding and practice (with a doll!) proper breastfeeding positions. You'll get bottle-feeding tips, and learn ways that dads and grandparents can help in addition to learning how to prevent and treat common problems. The class is taught by a lactation consultant so you'll know where to turn if you need further help once the baby arrives. Parents will view different breast pumps, nursing bras, and other nursing necessities. This is a great opportunity to decrease anxiety about feeding your new baby before the big day comes.

Cost is $60 for the 2-2 ½ hour class. Both private and group classes are available, call 406.721.5440 for times and dates for either and to register.

More info: www.nursingnook.net…

"Dreamers and Dust"

The University Center Art Gallery
UM Campus
Missoula, MT
Tuesday, March 16, 2010

For more information, call gallery Director Samantha Guenthner at 406-243-4991 or e-mail ucartgallery@mso.umt.edu.

More info: life.umt.edu…

Griff Williams: It Is Not Down in Any Map; True Places Never Are

Missoula Art Museum
Missoula, MT
Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Moiese, Mt
Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 7am – 5pm

Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 10am

MAM is proud to present this exciting body of work produced by Missoula artist Donna Loos. She states of the series,
“I tried to keep a blank mind and to paint unconsciously or subconsciously, or rather, to paint the negative space around a shape. I left the shape dark, and then studied the composition for awhile, looking for shapes as I would look for shapes in a summer cloud. Later I understood that I had painted my autobiography.”

More info: www.missoulaartmuseum.org

KBGA Presents Vampire Weekend

The Wilma Theatre
Higgins
Missoula, MT
Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 8pm – 12am

KBGA College Radio, 89.9 FM is thrilled to announce our biggest show in our 13 year history: New York City€™s Vampire Weekend return to Missoula on Tuesday, March 16th, at The Historic Wilma Theatre. The show is all ages. Tickets available on Friday, January 8th at 10 AM at Rockin' Rudys, The Source in the UC, and online at www.inticketing.com
XL Recordings Vampire Weekend has played Missoula twice before, both at The Badlander. Because of the band€™s popularity and success of their first self-titled debut album, they've reached the level of the Historic Wilma Theatre. On Tuesday, January 12th, Vampire Weekend releases their second album, Contra.
Some bands stay in a holding pattern their whole careers. Others jerk the steering wheel hard and fly off the road. On their second album, Vampire Weekend does neither. Or maybe they do both. "I think we sound more like Vampire Weekend than we did on the first record," says drummer Christopher Tomson.
Contra pulls off a series of impressive feats: It's bustling with fresh ideas, and yet it sounds immediately familiar; it's heavily layered but taut and kinetic; it chews ravenously through sound palettes and rhythms, and yet it's nimble and assured; it's still breezy, and yet it smolders with a newfound emotional heft. "It's sadder than the first one, a bit more sentimental," says singer Ezra Koenig. The songs are catchy, fast, twinkling, clattering the darker themes of loss, doubt and regret accumulate almost imperceptibly, but they land a powerful blow.
Ideas for this record had been bubbling since before the release of their debut. The band started recording in January 2009, only two weeks after finishing an 18-month world tour supporting their first record. They had initially planned to work in California, feeling that the new record's spiritual home was the West Coast. The decision to work in New York, however, ultimately provided the freedom and perspective to properly realize their vision.
That March, the band toured Mexico for the first time. They recorded new material blocks away from Frida Kahlo's house in the Coyoac ¡n neighborhood of Mexico City. In Monterrey they found a kindred spirit in DJ/Producer Toy Selectah, exchanging ideas and philosophies over days spent listening to records in his home studio. They returned to New York energized.
The finished product explodes any reductive notions of what constitutes Vampire Weekend's sound and aesthetic. The varied influences here include third-wave ska, the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band, Brazilian baile funk, Congolese thumb pianos, Repo Man, Sublime's 40 Oz. to Freedom, reggaeton, bachata, Bollywood, Philip Roth, Beethoven, NYC 1983, dancehall, and the Beastie Boys' second album, Paul's Boutique.
All of these influences are incorporated with subtlety and sophistication, woven together into a seamless fabric of references that, heard in full, resembles nothing so much as itself. Vampire Weekend's music and lyrics serve to both construct and deconstruct a world around them. Like the word "contra" itself, the songs are layered with meaning and invite interpretation. With this album, Vampire Weekend have staked out an alien territory literate, crackling, alive that's unmistakably their own.
Vampire Weekend have played Lollapalooza, All Points West, Pitchfork Music Festival, Bonaroo, and toured all over the world. They return to Missoula, MT on Tuesday, March 16 at The Wilma Theatre. Tickets are $23 in advance and are available on Friday, January 8th at Rockin€™ Rudy€™s, The Source in the UC, and www.inticketing.com.
"Dreamers and Dust"

The University Center Art Gallery
UM Campus
Missoula, MT
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Wednesday, March 17, 2010
