"Unintended Consequences: 1918 - The Flu and World War I"

“Death is a personal thing, a deep family tragedy.”
In Missoula, the fourth largest community, the city’s hospitals were overwhelmed. The city and county officials struggled to deal with the outbreak. The community was desperate.
According to historical documents the “Spanish Influenza” epidemic of 1918 was the most virulent flu epidemic in history. It killed more than 5,000 in Montana, more than 650,000 in the United States, and an incredible twenty to fifty million died worldwide.
At the same time the flu was taking its toll, America was still engaged in World War I. These two catastrophic events impacted the lives of many with devastating consequences.
Not only did the flu claim many civilian lives but the military was hit hard also. Some speculated they might be victims of biological warfare because Germany had already introduced chemical warfare in Europe. This was a time of turbulence and suspicion, and none more so than in Montana.
When asked why she chose this as a theme for the spring exhibit, L. Jane Richards, Senior Curator/Assistant Director of the Museum said, “I chose this theme because of its historical impact. The exhibit demonstrates the way science has treated the flu over the years since 1918. It’s also about how the war changed America and how its politics still affects us today.”

Anne Appleby: Here We Are

Internationally known artist Anne Appleby will be featured in the Lynda M. Frost Contemporary American Indian Art Gallery from July 7 through November 22. Appleby'€™s luminous, oil and wax paintings communicate through the formal language of color-field abstraction. Taking the viewer beyond this initial reference, the artist transforms what at a glance appear to be monochromatic panels, revealing subtly enlivened surfaces with incandescent layers of muted color. Each painting has been built up through many applications of varied translucent tones.

The exhibition will showcase several important early works, accentuating the development and approach of this celebrated artist. Appleby’s work has always been reductive of and clearly inspired by the natural world. This natural inspiration speaks directly to her Native American heritage. MAM is proud this exhibition, which celebrates the gift of works that the artist has made to MAM.

Appleby received her BFA from The University of Montana and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has been the recipient of many prestigious grants and awards, including a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, a SECA Art Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and a Western States Art Federation award.

Freeman Butts Exhibition

Reception and Gallery Talk with Ray Campeau: September 4, 5-8 pm

Ten years following his death in 2008, the Freeman Butts estate
generously offered to gift a selection of his work to six institutions
in the state of Montana. Those institutions, including MAM, met several
times with the trustee of the estate and made selections from the estate
to better reflect Butts' work already in their collections. This rich
gifting of works is intended to more fully frame the artist's legacy
within the state. The institutions involved acknowledged no single
institution in the state had the space or resources to accommodate the
voluminous amount of Butts' work. Therefore, all six institutions
selected works to fill out their collections, made a commitment to
feature the work, and generated scholarship about Butts' influence. All
six institutions agreed to lend and borrow the work with each other to
further educate the public of the legacy of this important Montana
painter. We are deeply grateful to Ray Campeau, Butts' longtime friend,
in helping facilitate this important gift. MAM is deeply indebted to the
Freeman Butts family and wishes to thank Daisy Butts for her faithful
support. Campeau will give a gallery talk on September 4th at 7 pm.

Freeman Butts, Electric Storm, 1992, acrylic paint, MAM Collections.

Paul Harris : The Shut-In Suite

Paul Harris, born in 1925 in Orlando, FL, is best known as a sculptor and throughout his career he has employed almost every sculptural medium and process. From his plaster explorations of the human form while in graduate school in New Mexico in the late 1940's, to his thought-provoking and ephemeral experimental works of the 1950's utilizing plaster, papier-mache and string, to his marriage of high art and domestic craft in the stuffed and stitched cloth sculptures of the 1960's, Harris' aesthetic remains one of constant exploration. His drawings and prints act in the same manner as his sculptures: background meshes freely with subject, each part functioning as both formal and narrative elements resulting in a solid look at simple relationships, where everything boldly stands for itself.

In 1969, Harris received a fellowship from the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles and while there created the Shut-in Suite. Harris states, "I lived alone in a rundown LA apartment amidst my own disorder. I had not intended to make a Shut-in Suite . . . there was just no time to go out into the world. I shuttled between the apartment and the print center for three months. At the end of the second month I realized that my world was first, a crummy apartment and second, my imagination." Harris' crisp images in the Shut-in Suite are still-lifes seen through a zoom lens with views cropped and flattened. In some cases single objects are the focus, assuming an iconic character, like the lamp in Left a Light On. In others, the combination of flat patterns and implied dimensions causes imagery to shift between an abstract and a representational identity, as in Lawn Party. To achieve the unusual effects found in the Shut-in Suite, Harris drew on the stone, aluminum, or zinc plates using a combination of lithographic pencil, Harris Triple Ink, asphaltum, and lithotine. Harris also introduced collage elements of hand-cut self-adhesive foil and vinyl.

The Missoula Art Museum would like to thank Nicholas Harris, son of Paul, who generously donated these ten prints from The Shut-in Suite to our permanent collection in honor of Bob and Gennie DeWeese.

Scott Fife: Big Trouble - The Idaho Project

Artist Scott Fife has long been obsessed with the
historic characters that helped shape the time we live in; characters
that have often fallen into the dark recesses of history. Through his
re-creations, Fife offers us a renewed perspective reminding us of the
famous quote by George Santayana, "Those who cannot remember the past
are condemned to repeat it."

One such historic event with national impact, and the focus of this
exhibition, was the assassination of Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg in
1905. The murder occurred in Caldwell, ID, and the subsequent trial in
1907 was held in Boise, ID. Although this tragic drama was played out
over a century ago, its relevance today must not be understated. The
story of a small town in a small state, thrust into a national spotlight
as a consequence of unrest associated with the extractive industries, is
not lost on a Montana audience. Montanans too, have a long history that
has borne witness to the consequences of labor's upheaval and industry's
selfish acts. Much of this historical labor drama was played out again
and again and then set aside, out of the spotlight, forgotten, to fade
into the recesses of our collective memory.

Teresa Tamura - Made in Minidoka: The Incarceration of Japanese Americans in Idaho

This exhibition features a selection of photographs from
the larger body of work Tamura has generated over the past decade.
Tamura, the daughter of second generation Japanese Americans, was born and raised in Nampa, Idaho, a small town just a two hour drive from the remnants of the Minidoka Relocation Center. Though growing up in Idaho, in such close proximity, she was never told of the internment camp; first learning of Minidoka in 1978, in journalism school, at Idaho State University.

In 2001, Tamura heard artist Roger Shimomura lecture about his paintings based on the journals his grandmother kept while interned at Minidoka. Tamura, like Shimomura, was inspired to depict a sense of the place and the life of internment at Minidoka. Her images, captured on black and white infrared film, accentuate the stark landscape and architectural remains of the camp while lending a timeless quality to the photographs. The present day portraits of internees are honest and human. Tamura's eye for composition, honed over twenty years as a photojournalist, unites her unique photographic vision with persistent honesty that is both personal and universal.

Winter Wildlife Season at the National Bison Range

With the weather change from the heat of summer to the crisp cold of winter, wildlife behavior also changes. One no longer needs to be up at the crack of dawn to catch sight of deer or elk. Except during storms, animals will be up and about at any time throughout the short winter days. So it is a great time to visit your favorite National Wildlife Refuge, such as the National Bison Range in Moiese.

The Refuge is open daily, from 7 a.m. to dark, which can come as early at 5 p.m. during the middle of winter. The Winter Drive provides a 10-mile round trip along a gravel road and it is open daily, weather and road conditions permitting, of course. This route offers wildlife viewing opportunities for bison, white-tail deer, elk, pronghorn antelope and bald eagle along Mission Creek and in Alexander Basin. There are spectacular views of the Mission Mountains from the Basin. Visitors may also take the shorter West Loop Drive and find deer, pronghorn or other wildlife. We suggest people give themselves about an hour to do the drives so they can go slowly enough to enjoy the wildlife and scenery. As the season advances, roads may become snowy and/or icy, so use caution when driving. No fees are charged during the winter season.

Another good spot for viewing bison and sometimes elk is along the south side of the Range along Highway 93 north of Ravalli. Or, check out the southwest side along Highway 200 and look for bighorn sheep among the cliffs and rocks.

If the weather cooperates, try walking the Nature Trail located in the Day Use Area. This short, 1-mile, accessible trail is a good place to see winter birds, such as black–capped chickadees, northern flickers and Townsend’s solitaires.

If you are interested in birds, spend a little extra time and drive north along Highway 212 to Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge. When there is open water in the reservoir, this is an excellent place to see geese and other waterfowl. Also look for rough-legged hawks, birds which choose to winter in the Mission Valley. Please remember, for your safety and the protection of wildlife, walking away from your vehicle is prohibited on these National Wildlife Refuges except for the designated areas.

Visitor Center hours at the National Bison Range are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays. Stop by to view the displays and watch the 15-minute video. Staff will be available to answer questions and direct you to the drives, trails and activities. And the Christmas Book Sale will be held the entire month of December. All items will be 25% off regular price at the Glacier Association bookstore. Although the drives are open daily, the Center is closed weekends and holidays. And during the holidays, the Visitor Center will be closed for Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27), Christmas (Friday, December 25) and New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1). Please call 406/644-2211 for up-to-date information, road conditions and Visitor Center hours.

So, take advantage of those short but nice winter days - or even the not-so-nice days - by visiting the National Bison Range. The wildlife is waiting.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Breastfeeding - Prepare and Succeed!

Expectant parents will learn the how's and why's of breastfeeding and practice (with a doll!) proper breastfeeding positions. You'll get bottle-feeding tips, and learn ways that dads and grandparents can help in addition to learning how to prevent and treat common problems. The class is taught by a lactation consultant so you'll know where to turn if you need further help once the baby arrives. Parents will view different breast pumps, nursing bras, and other nursing necessities. This is a great opportunity to decrease anxiety about feeding your new baby before the big day comes.

Cost is $60 for the 2-2 ½ hour class. Both private and group classes are available, call 406.721.5440 for times and dates for either and to register.

Zumba Fitness was created in the mid-90’s by Colombian native Alberto €œBeto Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer and choreographer for International pop superstars. Inspired by the traditional cumbia, salsa, samba and merengue music he grew up with, Beto paired his favorite pulsating Latin rhythms with the red-hot international dance steps his clients loved and Zumba Fitness (Spanish slang for €œto move fast and have fun€) was born! Enjoy one of the fastest gowing dance crazes in America right here at the DDC! Tennis shoes/sneakers are recommended.

"Can the Cats" Food Drive

UM needs your help for a victory over Montana State University and over hunger during the annual "Can the Cats" food drive competition Nov. 7-21.

UM's Office for Civic Engagement has teamed with the University's Office of Greek Life to provide easy ways for campus and community members to help the Griz win this year. Beginning Saturday, Nov. 7, designated boxes for canned food donations will be located on campus in every UM residence hall, at The Source in the University Center and at the Office for Civic Engagement, located in Davidson Honors College Room 015. Collection boxes also will be placed at various Missoula locations.

Volunteers will collect canned food at Washington-Grizzly Stadium entry gates during Montana's home game against Northern Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 14. The food drive competition winner will be declared Saturday, Nov. 21, when UM and MSU hit the field for the 109th annual Brawl of the Wild in Bozeman. All canned food items collected by UM will be donated to the Missoula Food Bank.

For more information, call Ashley Widtfeldt at 406-243-5531 or e-mail oce@mso.umt.edu.

Brawl of the Wild Blood Drive Challenge

The fourth annual Brawl of the Wild Blood Drive Challenge will take place at UM on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 17-18.

The challenge pits UM donors against donors from Montana State University to see which school can collect the most donated blood for patients in need. The blood drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the University Center Ballroom, located on the third floor of the UC.

UM collected the most units of blood the first two years of the competition, but MSU came out on top last year, and the Brawl of the Wild blood drive traveling trophy now sits in Bobcat territory. Help make the Grizzlies victorious this year by donating so the American Red Cross can meet the blood needs of accident victims, premature babies, surgery patients and others.

To make an appointment, go online to www.givelife.org and enter sponsor code "gogriz." Walk-ins are welcome. Positive ID is required to donate blood. Remember to eat a complete meal and drink plenty of water before donating blood. For eligibility questions, call 800-737-0902.

Greening UM : Open House

UM will hold an open house at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the University Center Theater to provide the public an opportunity to comment on the draft of UM's Climate Action Plan. The plan addresses the three largest sectors of UM carbon dioxide emissions: purchased electricity, transportation and energy on campus from the steam co-generator.

In 2007 UM President George Dennison signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, dedicating UM to reducing its carbon emissions. Last year UM achieved several milestones toward that goal. The University completed its first-ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory, created the Office of Sustainability and hired a full-time sustainability coordinator, Cherie Peacock. Peacock's primary focus has been to draft the University's Climate Action Plan.

Information about the plan and the University's sustainability efforts is on the Greening UM Web site.
