OLD FIDDLER’S CONVENTION :: Galax, VA

OLD FIDDLER’S CONVENTION - AUGUST 4-9 H GALAX, VA.

THE BEST: Way to see the real string pickers of Appalachia show off their mountain grown chops.

THE BETA: An institution in the region since 1935, this is the oldest and largest fiddler’s convention in the world. You’ll get your fill of strings with a little time here, as the region’s best musicians—known and unknown—take to the stages for some heavy competition over a full week of picking in the mountains of Southwest Virginia.

THE BANDS: This is where the real string heroes of Appalachia come out to shine. Most might not have record deals or their names on posters, but the mountain folk know where to find them.

More Information:
www.oldfiddlersconvention.com

This event from www.blueridgeoutdoors.com…

Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West

Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West is now showing in the MegaDome Theatre at the Science Museum of Western Virginia. One of the most popular National Geographic large-format films of all time, Lewis & Clark will run through August 31, 2008.

Through careful research and meticulous recreations, this scientific expedition lives again on the big screen. Movie-goers will go back 200 years to experience this monumental quest—the adventure, danger and beauty of the unmapped West.

The film chronicles the group of explorers led by Lewis and Clark into uncharted territory to find a water passageway to the Pacific Ocean and describe for science the wonders of the west.

The expedition conquered raging rivers, buffalo-filled prairies, sub-zero temperatures and rugged mountains on their 8,000-mile journey to the Pacific Ocean and back. The generosity of Native Americans is detailed, including the story of Sacagawea, a teen-aged Native American girl who accompanied the group and whose contributions were invaluable to the success of the expedition.

Sponsored by the Bank of Botetourt, Carris Plastics, NTELOS, and the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce.

This class will introduce hand building techniques that allow students to work in their own kitchens or home space. Students will make kitchen ware using rolling pins, wooden spoons and other utensils. Projects will include mugs and bread pans using simple techniques that result in functional and artistic ceramic ware.
Jayn Avery is a self-taught potter/sculptor/writer living in Floyd County, Virginia. The direction of her life was changed by one introductory class in pottery taken at Cornell University while she was a student working on her MS in environmental education. As advocate of simple living, she bases her technique on the principles of least cost, least equipment, and maximum use of available resources. Her teaching emphasis is on personal creativity and resourcefulness. www.blueheronpotteryweb.com

Traditional Blacksmithing

This week long class will be catered to the beginning blacksmith. Skills learned will be fire management, safe forging practices, and traditional blacksmithing techniques. Students will take home several projects that they have completed with their own hands! Students will explore fundamental forging techniques that will lead to cooking utensils and other period ware. No experience is needed, only be prepared for a great time!
Steven Kalb has been blacksmithing for over 15 years. He has studied blacksmithing under some of the best American blacksmiths, and taken classes at nationally recognized schools. Sharing the craft is important to Steven. He has completed terms as Program Chairman, Regional Coordinator, and Trustee for the Florida Artist Blacksmith Association. He also does demonstrations at his coal forge periodically at Koreshan State Park in Estero, Florida. Steven’s interest in blacksmithing began with traditional forging. Period cooking gear and traditional joinery were his passion for several years. Then his art took a more organic direction, where he continues to explore it to this day. www.kalbironworks.com

"Louisiana Link"

For the first time since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, O. Winston Link’s oldest exhibition of photographs documenting life in Louisiana will be on view for the public. Opening May 10 at the O. Winston Link Museum, “Louisiana Link” will provide visitors with a new perspective on the work of this important and influential artist. Through more than 50 images Link captures numerous different facets of 1937 life and industry in Louisiana. These include the daily activities of an LSU student, the Catholic blessing of the shrimp boats, oil prospecting, alligator hunting, rice harvesting, cotton marketing, bee insemination, and parties of then Governor Leche.

“Louisiana Link” will present rarely seen prints – offering new insight on a photographer whose name and iconic railroad images enjoy worldwide recognition. Although best known for his dramatic black and white portraits of the vanishing steam locomotive, Link was a versatile photographer who made portraits of friends, records of events and striking architectural and cultural documentary through his numerous commercial accounts. The exhibition represents the first of these commercial endeavors and allows viewers to see the photographic path Link traveled on his road to the Norfolk and Western project.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to share with our visitors a deeper look into Link’s working method and his early career work. In a great departure from our permanent galleries, this exhibition is an exploration of a culture and a man.” said Kim Parker, director of the Link Museum.

The collection will be on display until October 1, 2008 and is on loan from Louisiana Link, LLC – an organization created by Link’s only son, Conway, to gather and exhibit these earliest works by Link. Acquired directly from the photographer by his son, the images showcase Link’s raw talent even in his early 20’s and without formal training in photography.

Funding for this exhibit is by O. Winston Link Museum volunteers Bill and Ellen Arnold

Diana Reuter-Twining :: Sculptor

Ballator Thompson Gallery: Diana Reuter-Twining '73. Diana Reuter-Twining is a sculptor whose work is steeped in the genre of art known as animalier, the French term for "animal art." Living in Virginia and traveling worldwide affords her the opportunity to catalogue the nature that is so vital to her work. As an architect and artist, Reuter-Twining is keenly aware of the plasticity of space. Her bronze sculptures are dynamic and have the vantage point of an intimacy with nature that could only be captured through experience. Through August 16. Hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Power Yoga All Levels

POWER YOGA (VINYASA)
Power Yoga is an athletic, vinyasa (unbroken sequence) class. In these classes the postures are all connected with movement; one pose naturally “flows” into the next. We begin with centering, warm-ups, then move into a more active practice. We wrap up with cooling, calming postures, and end with a deep relaxation. Poses flow quickly from one to the other, so a knowledge of basic yoga poses is required. Level 1 classes are appropriate for anyone who has taken six or more beginner classes and has a basic knowledge of the poses. Level 2 classes are more challenging and are better suited to individuals who are looking for a more physically demanding class.

Beginning to Intermediate Modern Class. No experience necessary! Wear comfortable clothes. Prepare to work bare foot. Don't forget to bring water.

Modern emphasizes the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in movement. This class focuses on the breath (inhale/exhale), concepts of overcurve/undercurve, contraction/release of the torso, articulation of the spine, and holistic muscular strength.

This class will break down movement sequences and provide students with exercises that build strength, increase flexibility and provide a foundation that can be applied to all dance styles.

This is a drop in class. Students do not have to commit to monthly schedule. This class meets T and TH each week. Check the weekly schedule at www.theh2oheater.com to make sure class is being held at the regularly scheduled time!

Pottery in the Kitchen

Floyd Country Store Friday Night Jamboree

Friday evening at the Floyd Country Store, Blue Ridge Highlands in Floyd County

The Floyd Country Store, home of the Friday Night Jamboree, was constructed around 1910, and has been an important part of the community ever since.

The Jamboree has run for many years with "Granny Rules: no smokin', no drinkin', no spittin', and no cussin'."

The Jamboree starts every Friday at 6:30pm with an hour of bluegrass gospel music. At 7:30pm, dancers hit the floor, flatfooting and clogging to the music of regional Bluegrass or Old-Time bands. The music and dancing continues until at least 10:30pm, with an occasional two-step, square dance, or waltz thrown in for fun. If the crowd is willing, at 10:30pm we'll round up one of the jamming groups that can be found picking outside or upstairs in the store, and they will play for the crowd until around 11:30pm.

Friday, February 02, 2007 - Friday, December 25, 2009 (6:30 PM-11:30 PM)

Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials

Lil Ed Williams, although small in stature, is a true giant of the blues, and among the very last authentic West Side Chicago bluesmen. From smoking slide guitar boogies to raw-boned Chicago shuffles to the deepest slow blues, Lil Ed Williams is a master bluesman. A gifted guitarist and a remarkably gritty and soulful vocalist, Williams, along with his blistering, road-tested band, The Blues Imperials, has been tearing up clubs and festival stages all over the world for almost 25 years. Not since the heyday of Hound Dog Taylor and The HouseRockers has a Chicago blues band made such a consistently joyous, rollicking noise. Between the band's wonderfully untamed music and Ed's flying leaps, his back-bending, his toe-walking through the audience and his sliding across the stage on his knees, it's no wonder The Boston Globe called Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials' the world's #1 houserocking band.
