The North Bay Wind Ensemble and Napa Valley College Orchestra conducted by Harry Cadelago are continuing the MUSIC IN MAY festivities in the Main Theater at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center May 19, 2013 at 3 pm.

The Napa Valley College Orchestra will begin the afternoon with pieces from Rimsky-Korsakov, W.A. Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Viola Soloist and NVC Instrumental Scholarship recipient, Garrett Hoffman will be featured in the Allegro Movement of the “Viola Concerto in D Major” by Franz Hoffmeister.

The North Bay Wind Ensemble, will then take the stage with “Burgler’s Holiday”, by Leroy Anderson, starring the Trumpet Trio of Larrie Dastrup, Kurt Nystrom, and John Killebrew. The Ensemble will continue with pieces by John Williams, Charles Ives, Dmitri Shostakovich, Rossano Galante, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Morgan Louie, Flute Soloist and also an NVC Instrumental Scholarship recipient, will be featured soloist in the “Flight of the Bumblebee” by Rimsky-Korsakoff.

This thrilling afternoon of music will take place at 3pm on Sunday May 19th in the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center Main Theater. The Center is located at 2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy. at the north end of the Napa Valley College Campus. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students, military, and seniors 60 and over. The Napa Valley College Jazz Ensemble conducted by William Gantt concludes the MUSIC IN MAY festivities in the Main Theater at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center May 24, 2013 at 8pm.

As an added feature to the evening, the NVC Jazz Ensemble will welcome guest artist Kent Cohea, Napa, CA, to the stage. As an independent music professional, Kent adds over 50 years of experience to the stage teaching and performing saxophone and flute. He studied at the State University of Iowa under classical great Gene Rousseau, attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and also had the good fortune to study with jazz giant Joe Henderson. Kent has performed with the Don Ellis Jazz Orchestra, toured with the Curtis Brothers Soul Review, and performed with the Steve Miller Band at the San Francisco Blues Festival. He also produced and performed in a tribute to Stan Getz called “As Good As It Getz” at the Copia Center for Wine, Food and the Arts in Napa, CA.

The evening will consist of music from Chick Corea, Sammy Nestico, and Adrien Re just to name a few being performed by the entire NVC Jazz Ensemble. The NVC Jazz Combo will perform pieces from composers Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, and Frank Rosolino. Who could resist tunes like “Blue Daniel”, “Fun Time”, “Gorilla Man Blues”, “The Plunger”, or “Blues for Alice”.

Jazz composer Sammy Nestico states, “If there is anything I've learned over the past six decades, it is not to take myself too seriously. Although my music starts out being notes on paper, it is the musicians who bring it to life and give it real meaning. That's where the magic is.”

This special evening of music will take place at 8pm on Friday May 24th in the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center Main Theater. The Center is located at 2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy. at the north end of the Napa Valley College Campus. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students, military, and seniors 60 and over. Artist Talk for "Linda Connor: From Two Worlds"

From Two Worlds, a solo exhibition of photography by Linda Connor, presents two seemingly divergent bodies of work. Dark Forces reveals Connor’s fascination with the time worn monasteries encountered in Tibet and Northern India. Presented as large-scale photographs, some printed on silk, the imagery reveals iconography of the enlightened and the terrifying, and spiritually charged deities that protect and guard the sacred spaces they occupy.
The Olson House, made famous by the American painter Andrew Wyeth, is a portfolio of quiet and haunting images of interior spaces and landscapes devoid of human presence, yet filled with history and reference.
Connor’s Dark Forces address the entropy of time and the political desecration of Buddhist monasteries in Tibet and Ladakh. Remnants of ornately drawn murals speak of the afterlife and reincarnation, an iconography rich in story. Avalokitesvara “The Great Bodhisattva of Compassion” resides intact in a 14th century meditation cave in Ladakh, India. The subject of Connor’s handmade artist book, the accordion format interweaves images of the deity with surrounding Himalayan landscapes.
In The Olson House series, Connor’s 8 x 10 view camera honors both Christina’s World made famous by Andrew Wyeth and also pays homage to Walker Evans, Frederick Sommer, and Charles Sheeler. From New England herself, Connor interprets Wyeth’s landscapes with a knowing sensitivity and freshness, and the unexpected response of being someplace for the first time.
Connor is a professor at the San Francisco Art Institute and has taught there for over 40 years. She is the recipient of the Guggenheim fellowship and three National Endowment for the Arts grants. She has had solo exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and Center for Creative Photography, Tucson. Her work is included in significant collections including The Art Institute of Chicago; di Rosa; Museum of Modern Art, New York; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. In 2008, Chronicle Books published Odyssey: The Photographs of Linda Connor in conjunction with a traveling retrospective exhibition. In 2002, she founded PhotoAlliance. A monograph of The Olson House series has been published by Datz Press.

Napa Valley Ballet- Les Sylphides

Napa Valley Ballet's 2013 dance concert will feature the classic ballet Les Sylphides with original choreography by Michel Fokine and music by Frederic Chopin. Les Sylphides, often described as a "romantic reverie", has no plot, but instead consists of many ethereal sylphs dancing in the moonlight with a handsome poet. NVB is proud to announce that this year we have enlisted the professional performing and choreography talents of Robert Dekkers, artistic director of Post:Ballet in San Francisco. He will dance with local Sylph maidens Emma Harris, Sydney Joy, Katie Suh, Isabelle LeMieux and Johanna Kittel and a complete corps de ballet. Also on the program will be Les Oiseaux, a presentation of different birds as they appear to bird watchers on a trek through Napa Valley! Climaxing the program will be an exciting new piece by Dekkers featuring local professional dancers.

We invite all to arrive early to attend our decadent annual Bubbles, BonBons & Ballet Fundraiser preceding the event at 5:00 in the Theater's lobby where chocolates and bubbles will be served.

We could call this a basic wine 101 tour...But really there is nothing basic about it. We welcome all who wish to expand their knowledge of all that is wine. We start at the beginning with an explanation of where, why and how we plant, grow and harvest our grapes. Then we move onto the winery, following the grape to wine process, from vineyard to the bottle. The tour culminates in a wine tasting of our Napa Valley Estate wines. You get to see how they are made and then taste the final product...not a bad deal at all.
