DESCRIPTION:Dr. Andrea Silva McManus will be leading the first meeting o
f Socrates Cafe on Wednesday\, May 23\, 2012 from 4-5 pm in Alumni Hall
Lounge. Please RSVP to her by May 22nd if you plan on attending. She
has included the below letter to give you some additional information ab
out meaning making.\n \nSocrates Café: Meaning Making and the College St
udent\n\n \n\n\nDear NECI Community:\n\n I am emailing to provide an exp
lanation about the Socrates Café. \n\nSo what is a Socrates Café anyway?
Socrates Café is a gathering where people from different backgrounds ge
t together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing
the central theme of Socratizing: the idea that we learn more when we q
uestion with others. \n\nIt all started a decade ago when Christopher P
hillips\, then a freelance writer\, asked himself what he could do in so
me modest way to further the deeds of those noble souls who had come bef
ore him who\, as William James put it\, “suffered and laid down their li
ves” to better the lot of humankind. \n\nHis epiphany came in the spirit
of Socrates. This meant to hold Socratic dialogues with anyone who’d li
ke to engage in a common quest to gain a better understanding of human n
ature. This included those who shared with him the aspiration of becomin
g more empathetic people and more critical and creative philosophical in
quirers. See this link:\n\nSocrates Cafe\n\nI was trained in my Doctoral
work as a Philosopher of Education so I could create environments where
students could safely learn\, be themselves and ask questions and discu
ss ideas with others in a non-judgmental way. My training is based on w
ork by my Doctoral Advisor\, Dr. Robert J Nash and Michelle C. Murray’s
book Helping College Students Find Purpose: The Campus Guide to Meaning
Making.\n\nHelping College Students Find Purpose\n\nWhy do students need
more help with meaning-making these days? Evidence indicates the transi
tion to adulthood is much harder and prolonged than it was twenty years
ago. See this relevant NY Times article:\n\nWhat Is It About 20-Somethin
gs?\n\nThere is a seminal book that dubbed this struggle the “Quarter Li
fe Crisis.” It is a must-read for anyone in their twenties\, anyone who
works with people in their twenties\, or anyone who has teenagers that a
re on their way to their twenties.\n\nQuarterlife Crisis \n\nCollege — w
hether you are a traditional-age college student or a career-changer at
mid-life — is a time to ask questions about who you are\, where you are
in your life\, and how you are going to get there. Is your life as you w
ant it to be\; if not\, what am I going to do about it? \n\nAdditional q
uestions for college students (especially traditional age) are “Who am I
to love and why?” and “What gives my life meaning so I can get out of b
ed and put one foot in front of the other every day — hopefully in an in
spired manner?” These are just a few examples of the kinds of questions
we will discuss at the Socrates Café.\n\nSo\, with that context in mind
\, please open the attached flyer\, note the date\, and\, if you plan on
attending\, please RSVP by Tuesday May 22nd. While this club is meant pr
imarily for students\, staff and faculty are welcome to attend as well.
 \n\n \n\nSincerely \, \n\nDr. Andrea Silva McManus \n\nChair of Core Fac
ulty \n\nCore Faculty Member\n\nNew England Culinary Institute\n\n52 Col
