DESCRIPTION:The well-travelled quantum engineers Alice and Bob arrive in
Newcastle and experience the spooky world of quantum physics.\n \n They
experience “superposition”\, “entanglement” and “teleportation” – pheno
mena which\, although weird\, can be used in quantum engineering to do v
ery useful tasks.\n \n Dr Irene D’Amico will guide you through the stran
ge situations that Alice and Bob encounter.\n \n In the everyday world m
easurements may be made without change or harm to the subject. In the qu
antum world even the act of looking represents measurement and has a ran
dom and unalterable effect on the particles observed.\n \n Particles in
a quantum state are said to be entangled\; each has multiple potential a
nd measurement of one automatically fixes the state of the other.\n \n T
he application possibilities of this include encryption and cryptanalysi
s\, which have security implications. The act of eavesdropping\, for exa
mple\, alters or destroys what is being observed (useful to governments
and the military\, as well as for personal privacy).\n \n Using entangle
ment and superposition\, quantum computers may in the future be able to
carry out an unimaginable number of functions simultaneously.\n \n Quant
um teleportation offers the possibility of instantaneous transfer of pro
perties of one quantum system (but not yet human beings) to another acro
 ss distances\, using entangled photons.\n \n Event poster (PDF\, 1 MB):
