Set in 1927, RADIUM GIRLS captures the true story of Grace Fryer, a teen-age factory worker who paints glow-in-the-dark watch dials for the U.S. Radium Corporation and wages a bitter battle against her powerful employer when she discovers the paint has given her and her co-workers deadly radium poisoning. Nine actors play over 30 characters in this fast-moving play that depicts a watershed moment in U.S. labor law and media history.

Following the 2 PM performance on Sunday, February 12th, an interdisciplinary panel will discuss the significance of RADIUM GIRLS to legal, media, and public health history in the United States. The panel will feature Shan Mohammed, Director of the Northeastern Public Health Program in Urban Health, Patricia Illingworth, JD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy and Religion and College of Business Administration and Lecturer in Law, Northeastern University Law School, and Charles Fountain from the School of Journalism. A reception with the speakers follows the panel discussion.

About the Author: Didi Emmons is a chef, cookbook author, educator, and former restaurateur. Currently she is executive chef for Take Back the Kitchen, with is part of Haley House in Boston’s South End and Roxbury, Massachusetts. Haley House is more than 40 years old and was originally started to provide basic necessities to the homeless. It soon expanded into a full-service soup kitchen run by a live-in community of volunteers and guests.

She studied cooking at La Varenne culinary institute in Paris. Didi currently is a trans fat consultant for the Boston Public Health Commission and works with the Boston Public Schools to improve school lunches. She has been affiliated with Chefs Collaborative and Slow Food. In 2009, she was presented with the 2009 Gardens for Humanity Visionary award. Didi lives in Boston. Title: Functional association of brain and body in affective decision making

Abstract: Though traditional microeconomics has supposed that human decisions are based on logical and exact computation of cost-benefit balances or efficacies, studies in behavioral economics and psychology have shown that humans sometimes make irrational decisions driven by affects, especially when values of options and contingencies between options and outcomes are uncertain. Some theorists argued that one important source of such affective drives influencing decision making is bodily responses which are represented in brain regions such as the insula and anterior cingulate cortex. In this talk, empirical evidence for the functional associations of the brain and body accompanying affective decision making will be shown as follows. (1) Heart rate responses and concentration of inflammatory cytokine (IL-6) can predict acceptance or rejection to an unfair offer in an economical negotiation game, the Ultimatum Game. Activation of the anterior insula mediates this phenomenon. (2) Enhancement of interoception by biofeedback technique affects decision making with risk. (3) Sympathetic responses reflected by secretion of epinephrine are represented in brain regions such as the midbrain, anterior cingulate cortex, and anterior insula, and furthermore can determine randomness of decision making in a situation where action-outcome contingency is stochastic and unstable.

Profiles in Innovation: Beyond Jeopardy! The Implications of IBM Watson

Northeastern University will host IBM’s Watson creator David Ferrucci, as part of the Presidential Speaker Series, Profiles in Innovation––which brings the world's innovative minds to the Northeastern community.

Watson, named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, was built by a team of IBM researchers who set out to accomplish a grand challenge––build a computing system that rivals a human’s ability to answer questions posed in natural language with speed, accuracy and confidence. The quiz show Jeopardy! provided the ultimate challenge because the game’s clues involve analyzing subtle meaning, irony, riddles and other complexities in which humans excel and computers traditionally do not. Watson passed its first test on Jeopardy!, beating the show's two greatest champions in a televised exhibition match, but the real test will be in applying the underlying data management and analytics technology in government and business from Dr. David Ferrucci, Principal Investigator Watson project, IBM Research.

Dr. Ferrucci’s team of 25 researchers focuses on developing technologies for discovering knowledge in natural language and leveraging those technologies in a variety of intelligent search, data analytics, and knowledge management solutions.
