Relationships with local growers flourish. Backyard gardens and new farmers’ markets sprout. And neighbors learn that, by working together, they can create a stronger local food system that takes advantage of the resources within their community., For nearly two years the Oregon Food Bank has worked toward that goal through their Food-Education-Agriculture-Solutions-Together (FEAST) program. FEAST is a community organizing process that allows participants to engage in an informed and facilitated discussion about food, education and agriculture in their community and begin to work together toward solutions to help build a healthier, more equitable and more resilient local food system., These events have planted the seeds for dozens of new ideas and programs all over Oregon that have improved each community’s food system. Recent FEAST programs across the state have helped expand relationships between donors and emergency food providers, connected rural school districts with local farmers, and created new and expanded farmers markets and community gardens to promote healthy, locally grown produce. Douglas County will be hosting its own FEAST event on Saturday, February 11 from 9am – 3pm at Phoenix Charter School, 3131 Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard, Roseburg. We will talk about food security and sustainability in our own communities. We are hoping to get as many people from the area involved in food (growers, distributors, nutritionists, policy makers, restaurants, eaters, etc.) to come so that all perspectives can be heard., This will be more than just a place to talk about things but also what steps we are going to take to actively tackle some of our challenges.
