We address a fundamental question in morphogenesis: what are the physical laws that govern the assembly of acinar structures? We report a novel type of human cell motility where single cells undergo multiple rotations. This motion is maintained as the cells cohesively divide to assemble into polarized multicellular spherical structures (acini) when placed in a 3D basement membrane surrogate gel. We visualize the complete evolution from the single cell to an acinus. We link the functional relevance of coherent angular motion (CAMo) to spherical architecture, and determine the importance of molecules involved in cell-cell adhesion and tissue polarity to the outcome. CAMo is observed in both primary human cells and established breast cell lines where the final realized geometry is spherical.

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness meditation teaches skills for being in the present moment no matter what the situation. Mindfulness meditation studies show positive outcomes in quality of life and symptoms across a variety of health issues (stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, chronic pain, and cancer). The key to getting the most out of mindfulness is PRACTICE. Mindfulness can be applied to any object of attention. For example, you can focus on your breath, sounds, thoughts, or emotions. You can also be mindful during your daily life activities like eating, cooking, or brushing your teeth.

The goal of this weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation class is to practice many different types of guided mindfulness meditations to experience which ones work best for you. Each week will highlight a different guided mindfulness meditation. No experience is required.

HOW TO FIND THE ROOM: Take the E elevators in the Hatfield Research Building to the 12th floor. Turn left as you exit the elevator. Take the first left and another first left. You will see 12D15 on your right.

Helané Wahbeh is a clinical researcher at OHSU. She specializes in mind-body medicine and has a NIH grant to study mechanisms of mindfulness meditation in posttraumatic stress disorder. She has completed a four year meditation teacher training program and was trained by Jon Kabat-Zinn in mindfulness meditation. She has had her own personal mediation practice for over ten years.

Epidemiology of Aging: The St Louis African American Health Cohort?

ABSTRACT

The African American Health study (AAH) is an NIA-funded cohort study of the predictors of disability now in its 10th year of follow-up. AAH is a multistage probability sample of 998 African Americans aged 59 to 65 years at baseline living in St. Louis, Missouri and in nearby suburbs. There have been three in-person, in-home assessments including interviews and functional measurements. Neighborhood characteristics are a key hypothesized risk factor for decreasing function and increased risk of disability. Dr. Andresen will provide an overview of AAH methods and measures, and key results, specifically functional decline and falling.

LECTURE SUMMARY: Despite the widespread availability of contraceptives, birth control methods are used inconsistently or incorrectly and this exposes women to the risk of unintended pregnancy. Reasons for imperfect use include misperceptions about risks and fear of side effects, particularly with hormonal methods. As a physician, Jeffrey Jensen, MD, witnesses firsthand the difficulty his patients experience when dealing with the consequences of unintended pregnancy. These women and their partners inspire his dedication to develop new contraception methods.

Dr. Jensen will talk about next-generation birth control and the race to bring better choices to family planning. Dr. Jensen is the Leon Speroff Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Director of theWomen's Health Research Unit in the Center for Women's Health, and a collaborating scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

Dr. Jade Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She also has joint faculty appointments in the Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Dept. of Molecular Virology & Microbiology, and the Program in Cell & Molecular Biology. She is also Co-Director of the Graduate Program in Cell and Molecular Biology.

She has been the recipient of several major awards while at Baylor, including the Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. Excellence in Research Award; The American Society for Microbiology Branch Lectureships; the Rosalind Franklin Young Investigator Award; and the NIH Director's New Innovator Award.

Dr. Wang received her B.Sc. degree from McGill University; her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco; and was a Postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Research: Accurate DNA replication is essential for the survival and fitness of all organisms. The goal of her research is to characterize the multifaceted interface between DNA replication and other cellular processes. Through this interface, replication responds readily to metabolic and external cues; conversely, cells monitor the replication status and respond accordingly. Components of this interface are likely to play paramount roles in the maintenance of genome stability and prevention of genetic diseases and cancer. Because replication mechanisms are conserved across all of life, her work in bacteria is a broadly applicable model, focused on three major directions:
- Prevention of transcription/replication conflict
- The interface between DNA replication and the cellular environment
- The physiological role of the nucleotide (p)ppGpp in stress response

Organs are spatially organized populations of different cell types working together to carry out higher order functions. Understanding how cells are organized is important for developing the next generation of virtual organs. For example, mapping the distribution of each functional cell type in the lungs can lead to the development of more informative simulations of dose-response. In addition, cluster analysis of the organization of cells and their expressed genes allows for learning more about the functions and relationships of sub-cellular molecular pathways. Over the past decade, new imaging and computational approaches have enabled the development of more comprehensive means for capturing 3D tissue architecture as well as the distribution of cell types and cell functions throughout entire organs, leading to massive amounts of data. One way to facilitate the representation and analysis of this data is through the use of multiresolution geometric frameworks. Beyond biological organs, multiresolution spatial organization and analysis has potential applications in other important fields such as understanding microbial communities.

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness meditation teaches skills for being in the present moment no matter what the situation. Mindfulness meditation studies show positive outcomes in quality of life and symptoms across a variety of health issues (stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, chronic pain, and cancer). The key to getting the most out of mindfulness is PRACTICE. Mindfulness can be applied to any object of attention. For example, you can focus on your breath, sounds, thoughts, or emotions. You can also be mindful during your daily life activities like eating, cooking, or brushing your teeth.

The goal of this weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation class is to practice many different types of guided mindfulness meditations to experience which ones work best for you. Each week will highlight a different guided mindfulness meditation. No experience is required.

HOW TO FIND THE ROOM: Take the E elevators in the Hatfield Research Building to the 12th floor. Turn left as you exit the elevator. Take the first left and another first left. You will see 12D15 on your right.

Helané Wahbeh is a clinical researcher at OHSU. She specializes in mind-body medicine and has a NIH grant to study mechanisms of mindfulness meditation in posttraumatic stress disorder. She has completed a four year meditation teacher training program and was trained by Jon Kabat-Zinn in mindfulness meditation. She has had her own personal mediation practice for over ten years.

The practical 24 credit certificate program provides an overview of the financial, policy, organizational and operational environment of healthcare-related enterprises, giving the student focused skills for designing and managing organizations engaged in the delivery of healthcare.

The 52-credit Master of Science in Healthcare Management program is geared toward those working on the front lines of management in the healthcare industry. The program focuses on learning and applying management techniques in the workplace. Many of our students have come to realize that they need additional training in order to be more effective in their jobs or to make a bigger impact on their industry. By taking coursework in the M.S. in Healthcare Management Degree they are on their way to realizing those goals and this program is particularly attractive to working professionals who wish to take classes at their own pace. MBSR teaches participants to develop specific skills for concentration and deep relaxation. This course is based on the national model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, at the UMass Medical Center. Two decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the course report: Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away, an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, improved self-esteem, an increased ability to cope effectively with stressful situations and a lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms.

Come join other women in a supportive environment designed to nourish you. We will engage in gentle stretching, strength building, breathing exercises, deep relaxation with guided imagery, and some aspects of meditation. Taught by a nationally certified cancer yoga teacher and assisted by an OHSU oncology nurses.

Women in any stage of healing from cancer are welcome (at least 6 weeks post-surgery). Registration form and a signed release from your primary cancer care provider are required. Space is limited and a waiting list may apply.

Existing REDCap users can attend weekly drop-in sessions to get help with surveys and databases. Drop-in Help Sessions are held every Thursday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in Hatfield Research Center Room 10D03.

New to REDCap?
OCTRI offers REDCap Tutorials that introduce new users to REDCap.

Tutorial Sessions will provide researchers and their staff with an overview of REDCap capabilities. Attendees will learn how to prepare and create REDCap databases and surveys.

Tutorials are held on the first Thursday and third Monday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Hatfield Research Center Room 10D03. Users who have already attended a Tutorial Session and need help with REDCap can attend drop-in sessions held every Thursday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the same place -- Hatfield Research Center Room 10D03.

What is REDCap?
OCTRI can provide researchers with tools for data collection and management. REDCap applications are user-friendly—fast and easy to set-up, web-based, and secure—ensuring data quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.

REDCap offers two secure, web-based applications (REDCap and REDCap Survey) designed to support data management for research studies. REDCap provides: 1) a stream-lined process for rapidly building a database or online survey; 2) a user friendly interface for collecting data; 3) audit trails for tracking data manipulation; 4) exports to common statistical packages; and 5) advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.

Our Casey Outreach Team, along with OHSU medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy and physician assistant students will provide free health screenings to the uninsured during the annual “Health Screening Fair.” Last year, more than 100 OHSU students and community health professionals provided services for more than 220 uninsured Oregonians. The fair will be in conjunction with the weekly free meal service “Potluck in the Park.”

Event will take place between 11 and 4. Please arrive at 10:30 to assign stations and orient ourselves to the location.

Plan on a massive and amazing event!
