Mucho gusto - Conversation and play in Spanish and English

Mucho Gusto is a bilingual playgroup/language-learning experience for English and Spanish speaking parents and their children. Typically Spanish-speaking parents meet with ESL teacher, Molly Morrill, to practice the English language skills needed to participate in the community. The classes are guided by the needs of the students and any volunteers are welcome in the class. All children and English-speaking parents learn Spanish through play, stories, songs and games with Peruvian pre-school teacher, Teresa Murphy. The whole group will regularly gather together to share typical foods, cultural practices,
and of course, conversation and laughs. Mucho Gusto is ideal for parents and young children, but all are welcome.

Meditation Practice Group

Have you thought about taking time during the week for silent meditation but found yourself not quite getting around to making it a regular occurrence? Or perhaps you have found time to meditate on your own but would like to augment that with an experience of group meditation. Those interested in group meditation are invited to come to the church sanctuary between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoons. These meditation sessions are not meant to be classes, and no formal opening and/or closing ceremonies are planned. Simply come anytime between 1 and 1:30 p.m. and remember to use the key-coded office entrance. Bring a cushion, if desired; enter the sanctuary silently; be seated; and begin your own silent meditation practice. Each meditator is free to leave in silence whenever desired.

Also note that the church sanctuary is available during staff hours for those seeking a quiet and inspirational place for reflection or meditation. You may want to check the church calendar to find out if the sanctuary is being used before making the trip to the church.

THURSDAY POTLUCK
The Sisters Sledge sing: "We are fam-i-ly!" ORUUC-ers can do the same. But, like any family, each of us is limited in the time we can share with our siblings. Thursday potluck to the rescue. We start around 5:45 pm with chips, dip, a selection of cheeses, if we are lucky some Mrs. B's home-baked bread, and whatever else is brought to the spread. Beer and wine (available at cost) along with an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages are provided. The dinner bell rings around 6:15, when we line up and fill our plates with the variety of entrees, veggies, salads, and desserts our "brothers and sisters" have brought to the feast. Then we settle down to eat and talk (the topics are as varied as the participants at the table). It is wonderful time to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is an opportune time for older children and teenagers to learn and practice the art of polite conversation. It even affords parents of infants and toddlers a chance to "have a life" with so many "aunts and uncles" around to watch and care for the "wee ones". Usually around 7:00 we share the chore of "clean-up", and everyone is gone by 7:30. A weekly family reunion -- it can't get any better than that.

Harvest the Power: Developing Lay Leadership

Our church board has chosen “Lay Leadership Development” as a priority for the 2009-10 year. “Harvest the Power,” is a Tapestry of Faith Program for adults, developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2009. It provides leadership skill development that goes hand-in-hand with faith development so that church leaders grow in spirit as they grow as leaders.

“Harvest the Power” Leadership Retreat, November 20-22 will be held at
Grace Point in Kingston and facilitated by Rev. Jake Morrill and Tandy Scheffler.

This retreat is part of the Board’s 2009-10 focus on Leadership Development and is open to Board and Leadership Team members, Committee Chairs, or Group Leaders. Jake and Tandy will use
“Harvest the Power”, a new Unitarian Universalist Tapestry of Faith Curriculum, whose goal is to develop wisdom and understanding in leaders more than techniques and skills. Topics include:
 theological grounding for faithful leadership, based on the work of
Unitarian theologian James Luther Adams
 identity and skills as Unitarian Universalist lay leaders
 issues of power and authority
 differences between management and leadership
 freedom, responsibility, and choices
 spiritual and emotional well-being

The retreat is limited to 20 participants. There is a $25 deposit, which will be refunded to those who attend the retreat but not returned to those who register but then cancel (except due to extenuating
circumstances.) We will begin with a potluck dinner at 6:30 pm and conclude mid-morning Sunday. To register, contact Tandy Scheffler at
church.

The November retreat is the first of two retreats that will be offered, with the second to be scheduled for a time
in late winter. We are excited to be offering this in-depth growth opportunity for those who have chosen to give their time and talents in service of the church.

Come on out on Friday, November 20, at 7:00 PM to view the film "The Spitfire Grill." The film begins as Percy Talbot leaves a Maine prison and arrives in the small town of Gilead to take a job as a cook/waitress in a tiny restaurant. The locals are crusty and suspicious when she first arrives, but gradually everyone's resistance melts. A mysterious hermit lurking in the nearby woods, who leaves little gifts for Percy on her windowsill adds a secondary plot. One reviewer stated that "The Spitfire Grill" espouses some inarguably worthwhile ideas about forgiveness and generosity. Discussion follows the film for those who wish to stay.

Recommended in UUA's "Film as Theological Text." Running time 116 minutes. Rated PG13. Note that the show time has been changed from the usual show time of the 4th Friday of the month.

From 4:00-5:30, we’ll watch the movie, “Home for the Holidays,” starring Holly Hunter. “Home for the Holidays” is a comedy about an extended family gathering for the holidays, and confronting some of the
differences between them.
After the movie, from 5:30-7:00, we’ll reflect together. We’ll talk about how it is for us to “come home,” and we’ll help each other make plans for how to avoid familiar patterns of tension, conflict, or the blues that might arise in the holiday season.
As an added bonus, this will be a chance to get rid of some of your leftovers. Here’s what you can do. First, bring your leftovers to church to share for an informal dinner as we watch the movie. Then, before we go, some may want to exchange leftovers with each other, so at least you’ll go home not only with someone else’s perspective or wisdom on the holiday seasons, but with a dollop of their stuffing as well!

Mucho gusto - Conversation and play in Spanish and English

Mucho Gusto is a bilingual playgroup/language-learning experience for English and Spanish speaking parents and their children. Typically Spanish-speaking parents meet with ESL teacher, Molly Morrill, to practice the English language skills needed to participate in the community. The classes are guided by the needs of the students and any volunteers are welcome in the class. All children and English-speaking parents learn Spanish through play, stories, songs and games with Peruvian pre-school teacher, Teresa Murphy. The whole group will regularly gather together to share typical foods, cultural practices,
and of course, conversation and laughs. Mucho Gusto is ideal for parents and young children, but all are welcome.

This program features interesting speakers and is open to the public.

For November/December (one meeting on 12/1), we will discuss Types and Archetypes.

The Integral Salon meets monthly on the last Tuesday of the month, usually skipping December, or doing one meeting for Nov/Dec. The Salon is a discussion group focusing on applying the Integral Model of Ken Wilber to many situations, including politics, religion, arts, spirituality, psychological growth, history, and so forth. The model allows one to see the inherent biases of any point of view, and to see what is missing. All are welcome.

Meditation Practice Group

Have you thought about taking time during the week for silent meditation but found yourself not quite getting around to making it a regular occurrence? Or perhaps you have found time to meditate on your own but would like to augment that with an experience of group meditation. Those interested in group meditation are invited to come to the church sanctuary between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoons. These meditation sessions are not meant to be classes, and no formal opening and/or closing ceremonies are planned. Simply come anytime between 1 and 1:30 p.m. and remember to use the key-coded office entrance. Bring a cushion, if desired; enter the sanctuary silently; be seated; and begin your own silent meditation practice. Each meditator is free to leave in silence whenever desired.

Also note that the church sanctuary is available during staff hours for those seeking a quiet and inspirational place for reflection or meditation. You may want to check the church calendar to find out if the sanctuary is being used before making the trip to the church.

THURSDAY POTLUCK
The Sisters Sledge sing: "We are fam-i-ly!" ORUUC-ers can do the same. But, like any family, each of us is limited in the time we can share with our siblings. Thursday potluck to the rescue. We start around 5:45 pm with chips, dip, a selection of cheeses, if we are lucky some Mrs. B's home-baked bread, and whatever else is brought to the spread. Beer and wine (available at cost) along with an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages are provided. The dinner bell rings around 6:15, when we line up and fill our plates with the variety of entrees, veggies, salads, and desserts our "brothers and sisters" have brought to the feast. Then we settle down to eat and talk (the topics are as varied as the participants at the table). It is wonderful time to get to know each other on a more personal level. It is an opportune time for older children and teenagers to learn and practice the art of polite conversation. It even affords parents of infants and toddlers a chance to "have a life" with so many "aunts and uncles" around to watch and care for the "wee ones". Usually around 7:00 we share the chore of "clean-up", and everyone is gone by 7:30. A weekly family reunion -- it can't get any better than that.
