Friends of Canonchet Farm is sponsoring a walk led by John Campanini of the Rhode Island Tree Council. He will be looking for culturally, historically or biologically notable trees to be included in the Rhode Island Champion Tree Registry. As you learn what makes a "Champion Tree," perhaps you will also discover you have one in your own back yard. This walk is free and open to the public. For further information, call Kathie Kelleher at 783-3951. Please meet in the Ann Hoxsie Lane parking lot directly across from the Narragansett Town Beach South Pavilion, Route 1A. The popular Tuesday Morning Bird Walks will be continuing through the end of May. Bird activity then drops off while they're busy raising families, so we'll be taking June and July off, and then starting back up in August. Phil Budlong will be coordinating the programs. Meet at the satellite parking lot next to the Charlestown Mini-Super on Route 1-A at 8:00 a.m.

Thursday Morning Bird Walks at Eppley

May is the peak month for the spring bird migration, with different species moving through each week. This program offers plenty of chances to get in on the best birding of the year! This is also a rare opportunity to explore the Marion Eppley Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest Audubon refuges, but closed to the public except for guided educational programs. No advance registration is required. Walks will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather (i.e., more than just a little sprinkle)--if the gate is locked that day's walk has been cancelled; please don't walk into the refuge on your own.

Note there will be no walk held on May 18.

Join our 13th annual Open Gardens and see the gardens that have been featured in several local and national magazines, with over 300 Rhododendrons and Azaleas in bloom and over 100 varieties. Stroll the garden and woodland paths and see the continuing restoration-in-progress of these 50+year-old gardens! A $2 donation per person is being requested to benefit the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society. Once again, we expect a spectacular bloom this year!

RI Sierra Club Outing - Vernal Pools at the Great Swamp

Vernal pools are seasonal ponds that develop during the wet months of spring. They are fragile and important habitat for many animals including frogs and salamanders. See them while they last by joining the RI Sierra Club on this outing.

Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 12pm to caravan or at 1pm at the Great Swamp at the end of Great Neck road in W. Kingston. Plan to be home at 6pm.
