Influences of the Silk Road exhibit

Utah Museum of Fine Arts
Marcia and John Price Museum Building
University of Utah
Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, 1 – 2 p.m.

What do jade, chess, horses and Hinduism have in common? They were all exchanged on the Silk Road, of course! From the first millennium BCE through the second millennium CE, the Silk Road was a series of routes that crossed through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In the "Influences of the Silk Road" exhibit at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, visitors of all ages can explore objects from the Museum’s permanent collection that either traveled on the Silk Road or reflect the religions, technologies, and goods that were exchanged en route. Families and students will enjoy a treasure hunt through the exhibition and other galleries, get educational insight through an easy-to-use audio tour, and even test their skills in a game of chess. The exhibit runs Nov. 5 through April 25. Prepare for your visit by taking a virtual tour of the exhibition at www.umfa.utah.edu/silkroad.

Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real

The Eccles Center, 1750 Kearns Blvd.
Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Here’s to a new generation of peace-loving musicians shaking things up. Sure, these sons of a music legend and their three band-mates draw on ’60s-era passion as well as its musical icons, but these talented lads have an electric, rockin’ sound and message that is completely their own. From jazz to hard rock – with Hendrix licks and Afro-Cuban beats and a hint of their dad's folk-country style thrown in – Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real is a melting pot of sound. Rock, yes. Roll, yes. Plus, blues, psychedelia and a little country too.
Influences of the Silk Road exhibit

Utah Museum of Fine Arts
Marcia and John Price Museum Building
University of Utah
Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, 1 – 2 p.m.
