Influences of the Silk Road exhibit

Utah Museum of Fine Arts
Marcia and John Price Museum Building
University of Utah
Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, 1 – 2 p.m.

What do jade, chess, horses and Hinduism have in common? They were all exchanged on the Silk Road, of course! From the first millennium BCE through the second millennium CE, the Silk Road was a series of routes that crossed through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In the "Influences of the Silk Road" exhibit at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, visitors of all ages can explore objects from the Museum’s permanent collection that either traveled on the Silk Road or reflect the religions, technologies, and goods that were exchanged en route. Families and students will enjoy a treasure hunt through the exhibition and other galleries, get educational insight through an easy-to-use audio tour, and even test their skills in a game of chess. The exhibit runs Nov. 5 through April 25. Prepare for your visit by taking a virtual tour of the exhibition at www.umfa.utah.edu/silkroad.

Pioneer Theatre Company presents Is He Dead?

Pioneer Theatre Company presents Is He Dead?

7 Smart Fellers

O'Shucks at Quarry Village
8178 Gorgoza Pines Road,
Kimball Junction
Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, 8 – 11 p.m.

Proving they aren’t just fair-weather Westerners, the 7 Smart Fellers are returning to the region for a tour that will bring them back to three of their favorite venues from their summer tour. The Fellers, along with chief songwriter Dan Freund, have been busy since that tour – which took them to five states and covered 5,000 miles. October found them associated with musical icons including Willie Nelson and Neil Young as the featured act for Farm Aid Eve, an event to support America’s best-known musical benefit for family farmers. This fall, Freund and the Fellers have added to their dust-fueled mix of sincere originals and unexpected numbers from admired artists. As a former family farmer who now makes his home across the West, Freund writes with an authenticity built on personal experience. That authenticity is amplified by the strong musicianship of the other Fellers: T.C. Hirsch, Paul “Spoon” Keil, Craig Kuehnert, Peter McComas, Eric Petterson, and Pete Rude.

More info: www.myspace.com…

Desert Secrets Film Series: Zabriskie Point

Utah Museum of Fine Arts
University of Utah Campus
Marcia & John Price Museum Building
Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, 2 – 4 p.m.

Originally a box office failure and financial fiasco, Zabriskie Point attempted a grandiose statement on 1960s American society through intense images and an eclectic soundtrack. With the criticism and politics that plagued its release in the past, the film can be viewed as a fascinating period portrayal of parts of the 1960s counterculture movement in America, while placing emphasis on the haunting landscape of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California. Rated R.

More info: www.umfa.utah.edu…
