DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia Chamber Music Society\n\nThe Imani Winds was cr

musical traditions in a traditional wind quintet. Their 2006 recording
The Classical Underground was nominated for a Grammy Award\, and The Ph

he future of the once-quaint notion of the wind quintet.” ‑ The Washingt
on Post\n\nSince 1997\, the Grammy nominated ensemble has taken a unique
path\, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world wit
 h its dynamic playing\, culturally poignant programming\, genre-blurring
collaborations\, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member c
omposers and a deep commitment to commissioning new works\, the group is
enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully br
 idging European\, American\, African\, and Latin American traditions. I
mani means “faith” in Swahili.\n\nIn this concert\, Imani Winds explores
  the creations of Afro-Cuban\, Czech\, Brazilian\, American\, and Argent
inean composers. Imani members Valerie Coleman and Jeff Scott contribut
e arrangements to a couple of the pieces\, bringing new sounds and textu
res to the traditional instrumentation. The works selected for this conc
ert demonstrate the quintet’s mission to expand the wind quintet reperto
ire and diversify sources of new music.

DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia Singers opens its 2009-2010 subscription se
ason on Sunday\, November 8\, 2009 at 4:00pm with its presentation of “B
ach and Beyond” featuring influential choral works from the Baroque to t
he twentieth century at the newly restored Church of the Holy Trinity on
19th and Rittenhouse Square. The thirty-two voice professional chamber
chorus opens the program with Bach’s intricate Jesu Meine Freude\, for m
ixed chorus and organ. Composed in 1723\, it is widely considered to be
the finest of Bach’s six motets. This work is contrasted with the raw em
otions of 20th century Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera’s Lamentat
ions of Jeremiah. The concert concludes with the Mass for Double Chorus
by Swiss composer Frank Martin which Music Director David Hayes calls\,
“exquisitely detailed”. Written in 1922\, but not performed until 1963
\, this inspiring work is considered one of the great choral monuments of
  the 20th century.
