Scored for a sizeable orchestra that includes mandolin and guitar, this harrowing symphonic journey contains some of the most scintillating instrumental effects of Mahler’s output, and it sports a boisterous finale that Mahler scholar Henri- Louis de La Grange called “the most insane, most ‘deviant’ and most provocative of all his final movements.”
The Philadelphia Orchestra Christoph Eschenbach Conductor
Mahler	Symphony No. 7 Tickets: $10-$125, 215.893.1999 or www.philorch.org

counter)induction

counter)induction plays the University of Pennsylvania
Sunday, 8PM
November 22, 2009

This concert is free!
www.counterinduction.com

c)i@ upenn brings the band back to its spawning grounds with some of the best music from their decade of exuberant performances and daring programming. Kyle Bartlett’s Bas Relief features a fast-moving, highly textured first movement counterpointed by an impossibly delicate, hovering second movement. Douglas Boyce’s Deixo | Sonata fully exploits the emotional and dialectical depths of the medium. Centauro Marino by Salvatore Sciarrino is an exquisite, hyperreal manipulation of timbre and harmony, while Eric Moe’s Dead Cat Bounce is a vivacious yet heartfelt statement about current times. Penn professor Anna Weesner’s Lift High, Reckon—Fly Low, Come Close traces the interaction of contrasting musical ideas as they grow and integrate one another.

The performing members of counter)induction are Jessica Meyer (viola), Sumire Kudo (‘cello), and Benjamin Fingland (clarinets). Guest artists will be Miranda Cuckson (violin) and Steven Beck (piano).
info@counterinduction.com

Even without a finale—he sketched one but never completed it—the Ninth is one of the most gigantic symphonies in history. The luminous slow movement with which it ends makes a statement so eloquent and complete that it’s hard to imagine how the composer could have topped it with a finale. Acclaimed Brucknerian Jaap van Zweden, a former concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra who became music director of the Dallas Symphony in 2008, plumbs its depths, while veteran Horacio Gutiérrez balances the evening with Mozart’s sunny F-major Piano Concerto from 1784.
The Philadelphia Orchestra Jaap van Zweden Conductor Horacio Gutiérrez Piano
Mozart	Piano Concerto No. 19, K. 459 Bruckner	Symphony No. 9
Tickets: $10-$125, 215.893.1999 or www.philorch.org

The Philadelphia Chorus

The dignified and melodious sounds of Der Stern von Bethlehem recall the deepest meaning of Christmas with simplicity and sincerity and is evocative of our favorite holiday traditions. Considered one of his “forgotten” compositions, Rheinberger’s cantata was based on his wife’s writings on the Gospels of Mark and Luke, which he wove into a spacious cantata for choir and soloists. The piece in its entirety depicts the birth of Christ, moving from movement one as all of nature waits expectantly for His arrival through to movement seven where the men’s voices in the chorus personify the Magi as they sing of their gifts and what those offerings symbolize.

The Quatre Motets pour un temps de Noël, composed in the early 1950’s after a reawakening of Poulenc’s Catholic faith, are small music miniatures, like facetted jewels. Superficially they sound modern in their unexpected chord changes and discords, but they are rooted in the early and Renaissance music of Monteverdi and Palestrina.

The chorus also performs Canite Tuba, composed by Donald McCullough, the current conductor of the acclaimed Master Chorale of Washington, D.C. He wrote Canite Tuba, a Christmas Triptych for performance by the group in 2001 at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Spirited arrangements of familiar Christmas carols complete the seasonal program.

www.philachamberchorus.org

This year’s program features Jennifer Higdon’s ethereal O Magnum Mysterium scored for chorus, flutes, crystal glasses and chimes. The Philadelphia Singers commissioned this work and gave the world premiere in 2002. The centerpiece of the concert is Ottorino Resphighi’s (1879-1936) pastoral Lauda per la Natività del Signore (Laud to the Nativity). Resphighi, whose music was often referred to as “new old-music” combines elements of madrigals, fugue and Monteverdi-influenced vocal style in this seldom performed work scored for chorus, wind ensemble, piano and vocal soloists. The concert which begins with a candlelight procession will conclude with an audience carol sing.

Christmas on Logan Square

The Philadelphia Singers presents its beloved “Christmas on Logan Square” concerts on Saturday, December 12 and December 19 at 5:00pm at Philadelphia’s St. Clement’s Church on 20th and Cherry Streets.
