The Marriage of Figaro-Center City Opera Theater

Prince Theater
Sunday, February 5, 2012, 2pm

Center City Opera Theater presents The Marriage of Figaro Mozart’s comedic masterpiece will launch CCOT’s mainstage season at the Prince Theater
Philadelphia, Pa. - Center City Opera Theater’s first fully-staged production as a resident company of the Prince Music Theater is Mozart’s classic comedic opera The Marriage of Figaro. Performances are Saturday, February 4th at 8pm & February 5th at 2pm on the Prince’s cabaret stage. This production is fully-staged, sung in English, and features members of CCOT’s Young Artist Program.
In an continued effort to bring affordable opera to Philadelphia in accessible ways, Center City Opera Theater is offering a single price of $39 for general admission, with special VIP seating priced at $59 and student rush priced at just $15.
Andrew Kurtz, General & Artistic Director of Center City Opera Theater, says the intimate setting of the Prince’s cabaret stage allows for a more authentic representation of the intricate relationships among the main characters in The Marriage of Figaro, particularly the Count & Countess as well as their servants Figaro & Susanna. The opera, first performed in 1786, is a satire and was very controversial at the time of its premiere due to its mockery of 18th Century aristocracy. It survives today as one of the most popular operas ever due to its lively and catchy music, particularly its Overture.
Figaro features a cast entirely from CCOT’s Young Artist Program. Center City Opera Theater is an internationally-renowned post-graduate training ground for young emerging singers and opera professionals, giving performance experience to young talent before they thrive on international stages.
The Marriage of Figaro is a continuation of the plot of Rossini’s earlier opera The Barber of Seville, all drawn from Beaumarchais’ Figaro Trilogy. Figaro and his bride-to-be Susanna are busily preparing for their wedding celebrations; however, their lord Count Almaviva desires Susanna for himself and thus makes various attempts to stall the civil portion of the wedding. Figaro, Susanna, and the Countess discover his plot and conspire to reveal his scheming, all in hilarious fashion.
The performances on Saturday, February 4 at 8pm and Sunday, February 5th at 2pm will be performed in English with a chamber orchestra at the Prince Music Theater’s cabaret stage. Tickets can be purchased online at OperaTheater.org
ROLES (1=Saturday, 2=Sunday): Figaro (Baritone) - Paul Corujo Susanna (Soprano) - Jennifer Braun (1), Samantha Guevrekian (2) Count (Baritone) - Brian Major (1), Norman Garrett (2) Countess (Soprano) - Sarah Beckham (1), Jennifer Hoffmann (2), Britania Redington (cover) Cherubino (Mezzo-Soprano) - Alexandra Roth (1), Stephanie Melzi (2) Marcellina (Mezzo-Soprano) - Stephanie Melzi (1), Alexandra Roth (2) Basilio (Tenor) - Siddhartha Misra, David Koh (cover) Bartolo/Antonio (Bass-Baritone) - Robert Davidson Barbarina (Soprano) - Britania Redington Chorus - Christopher Lorge (tenor)
###
Center City Opera Theater’s mission is to present opera productions of the highest professional quality with a focus on new work and education, recruiting new audiences through intimacy and affordability of performances and providing opportunities for emerging opera professionals. George Crumb also performs his work Mundus canis (A Dog's Life) for guitar and percussion alongside guitar faculty member David Starobin.

The free recital takes place in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia; no tickets are required. The performance is part of Curtis's 2011-12 Appassionato season, which features bold programming, enriched curriculum offerings, and special events that herald Curtis's enduring influence on music in Philadelphia and the world.

Curtis frequently hosts residencies by world-renowned artists, who work with students in master classes and chamber music coachings. Other artists-in-residence during the 2011-12 season include the Johannes Quartet, cellist Gary Hoffman, and the PRISM Quartet.

Each semester Curtis 20/21, the school's contemporary music ensemble, studies and performs music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The ensemble often performs in major venues outside of school and is committed to performing and commissioning works from Curtis composers, both current students and alumni.

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. One of the world's leading conservatories, Curtis is highly selective and provides full-tuition scholarships to all of its 163 students. In this intimate environment, students receive personalized attention from a celebrated faculty. A busy schedule of performances is at the heart of Curtis's distinctive "learn by doing" approach. This philosophy has produced an impressive number of notable artists since the school's founding in 1924, from such legends as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to current stars Jonathan Biss, Juan Diego Flórez, Alan Gilbert, Hilary Hahn, Jennifer Higdon, and Lang Lang.

Curtis 20/21 Plays the Music of George Crumb
Sunday, February 5 at 3 p.m.
Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, 1726 Locust Street, Philadelphia

CRUMB
Ancient Voices of Children
Eleven Echoes of Autumn (Echoes I)
Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik: Ruminations on "'Round Midnight"
Mundus canis (A Dog's Life)

Free; no tickets required.

More info: www.curtis.edu

In recent years the group has gained an international flair with the addition of cellist Clive Greensmith and first violinist Martin Beaver. The quartet’s musical personality, however, has remained remarkably consistent, their interpretations distinguished by a determination to serve the music rather than to display virtuosity. For their first of two PCMS appearances this season, the Tokyo teams up with New York pianist Jeremy Denk for a program of works by Haydn, Grieg and Franck.

More info: www.pcmsconcerts.org
