By 1900 printmaking as a fine art was firmly established in the United States. Often working as illustrators for newspapers, periodicals, and books, this generation of artists focused on recording the life around them. Included in the exhibition are John Sloan’s etchings depicting scenes of daily life in the neighborhoods of New York City and the contrasts he observed between the wealthy and the working class; and George Bellows’ images of the campaigns of the evangelist Billy Sunday, the rise of boxing, and the atrocities of World War I. The period between 1900 and 1960 was a time when a number of women artists gained prominence as printmaker, and works by Isabel Bishop, Kyra Markham, and Mabel Dwight illustrate the American experience as they saw it. The current exhibition represents only a fraction of the Library’s rich holdings in the area of American master prints of the first half of the 20th century.

“From Pen to Print: The Handwriting Behind the Book” is an exhibition that features handwritten letters, notes, postcards, and other manuscripts that reveal personal, private, and otherwise veiled aspects of the production of books. Putting authors’ manuscript materials on display alongside their print books, the exhibition reveals the passions, obsessions, lofty dreams, and gritty realizations triggered by the writing and publishing process. These materials capture the relationships between19th- and 20th-century American authors, editors, and readers, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Alice Cary, Rufus Griswold, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Anne Warren Weston, Sarah Grimke, Angelina Grimke, Charles Folsom, and Robert Frost. These writers’ correspondence and notes, paired with rare, early editions of the books discussed therein, bring many fascinating facets of composition and publishing to light, notably the working relationships between authors and their editors and the interactions between authors and their readers. The exhibit also offers such curiosities as digitally enlarged signatures and passages from autographs, cross-hatched letters, and a selection of author portraits.

This exhibition is the result of an innovative, ongoing partnership between UMass-Boston's English M.A. Program and the Boston Public Library. UMass-Boston students take a semester-long course in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Room, engaging in hands-on research that generates a student-curated exhibit. This exhibition presents the results of a seminar that focused on the scholarly transcription and annotating of handwritten texts. Previous years’ topics have included books from colonial Boston, Shakespeare, public poetry, and the origins of the British novel.

The exhibition is free and open to the general public. It is located in the Rare Books Exhibition Room on the third floor of the Boston Public Library’s McKim Building, and is open M, T, W, F - 9am - 5pm; Th - 11am - 7pm. The exhibition runs through March 30, 2012.

The Leventhal Map Center’s cartographic collections, with 200,000 maps and 5,000 atlases, date from the 1480s to the present. They provide worldwide geographic coverage and illustrate many historical themes. The collection’s strengths focus on four key topics – the history and settlement of Boston and New England, the American Revolutionary War, maritime trade and nautical charts, and the growth and mapping of urban communities.
The exhibition is enriched by many individual treasures including the 1482 atlas, Geographia by Ptolemy, which is displayed next to a monitor that shows every digitized page of the book. World maps, atlases, and globes from the 15th – 17th centuries, as well as a wide range of historic maps of Boston and New England are on view. While a “treasure” is often defined by the beholder, some of these items are exhibited because of their rarity, while others were selected for their beauty, unique format or historic importance.

Unconventional Maps: Exploring the Stories of Cartographic Curiosities
When reading maps, we expect map makers to use standard conventions, especially in regard to projection, orientation, scale, and symbols. When a map maker does not use generally-accepted practices, we ask why? What is the story the map maker is trying to tell?

This exhibition of 25 maps and atlases highlights a variety of unconventional maps spanning the history of the printed map. For each, we demonstrate how it defies convention, and how that particular cartographic design heightens its story.

The earliest maps, dated from the mid-1500s portray an upside-down Africa and a world divided into three continents, reflecting medieval geographical concepts. Also represented are elaborately decorated world maps from the 17th and 18th centuries, classic 19th century bird’s eye views, as well as more contemporary educational, cartoon, propaganda, pictorial and journalistic maps. Exhibition supported by a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.

His current exhibit at the West Roxbury Branch Library showcases some of his pencil and charcoal drawings. "I enjoy their simplicity. With pencil I can focus on the lines of the drawing." The Vilna Shul, Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture is pleased to present a special weekly series, “Kabbalah: Mystics and Mavericks.” Kabbalah is the mystical wisdom, the native theology and cosmology of Judaism. This six-part series will explore how studying Kabbalah can help to reveal your inner strengths. Discover more about this Jewish perspective on tapping into your own unique, spiritual energy and learn how to incorporate it into your daily life. This weekly series will be held Tuesdays, February 7 to March 13, 2012 from 12:00PM to 1:00PM at the Vilna Shul, 18 Phillips St. Boston, MA. Course fee is $10.00 per session or $50.00 for the entire six-week program.

“Kabbalah: Mystics and Mavericks” will be taught by Rabbi Yosef Zaklos, director of the newly established Chabad of Downtown Boston. A native of Montreal, Rabbi Zaklos brings with him the unique depth and experience of having taught Jewish ideas and values in more than fifteen countries across five continents. As an experienced educator, he offers a diverse, flexible, and interactive teaching style. Rabbi Zaklos is also an accomplished author, writing for the Jewish Learning Institute, a provider of adult Jewish learning.

Art and Architecture Tour

The Boston Public Library offers free tours highlighting the architecture of Charles Follen McKim and Philip Johnson, as well as the many works of famed sculptors and painters. The tours last about an hour. They are led by volunteers and begin at the Dartmouth Street entrance of the Central Library in Copley Square. No appointment is necessary.
