Dog Days Bogota

Dog Days Bogotá is a collection of poetic and haunting photographs Alec Soth made during 2003 when he traveled to Colombia to adopt a baby girl. Soth photographed people, landscapes, and ephemera that he happened upon in a search for the familiar in the unknown and everyday. Because of the very personal nature of this journey, Dog Days Bogotá is both poetic and haunting, he says, “I wanted to share my honest impressions, including my fears.”

MassArt.edu/calendar; public transportation via T Green (E): Longwood; handicapped accessible.
Biology inspires Neri Oxman. Working at the interface of environmental design, science, and art,
Oxman is inventing the future of energy-efficient building materials. A Presidential Fellow at MIT’s
Department of Architecture, Oxman is inventing novel ways to design, fabricate, assemble, and maintain building “skins” so they can respond to load, light, and heat simultaneously. Think buildings that breathe, sweat, and grow. “I believe that, within two decades, buildings will be designed and constructed as biological tissues,” says Oxman.

LITERACISE Interactive and Bilingual Children's Exhibit

Literacise is an interactive children’s exhibit in English and Spanish. It is inspired by Irene Smalls’ story "Jonathan and His Mommy." In the story, a young boy and his mother travel together through Boston’s South End neighborhood taking steps of all sizes. Literacise brings the book to life – and to kid-size scale – on the first floor of the Central Library in Copley Square where children will be able to zig-zag, bunny-hop, and giant-step their way through the interactive exhibit. With tunnels to explore and secrets to find, children will experience reading in a completely new way. Parents and guardians will also be able to enjoy Literacise and will be able to borrow other activity-themed Boston Public Library books to share and experience with their young friends.

Wild Music: Sounds and Songs of Life

From talking drums first used in Africa centuries ago to the tunes piped through our headphones today, music is a central part of our being, and it's a trait we share with all of nature. With Wild Music, explore sounds from the natural world, like bird songs, whale cries, and insect rasps. Discover what they have in common with our own compositions-both intended, as with a Mozart symphony, and incidental, as on a busy city street. This is a highly interactive exhibit that allows visitors to expand their understanding of what makes music.

Wild Music: Sounds and Songs of Life is a production of the Science Museum of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers. Major funding comes from the National Science Foundation, with additional support from Harman International Industries, Inc. and NEC Foundation of America.

Running the Numbers: Portraits of Mass Consumption

Sociologists tell us that the human mind cannot meaningfully grasp numbers higher than a few thousand. Yet, understanding the consequences of our choices requires us to comprehend the incremental effect of millions or billions of small acts. How can we sensitize ourselves and, in turn, change our choices? Photographer Chris Jordan's large-format prints, assembled from thousands of smaller photographs, dramatically translate the raw language of statistics into powerful images of global mass culture that we can respond to emotionally. Seeing the cumulative impact of individual actions through this talented artist's lens awakens us to the enormity of our personal decisions.

This exhibit is made possible by Chris Jordan, courtesy of Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles

Seeing Songs

Technology has rendered music more accessible and pervasive than ever before. MP3 players are omnipresent; every cell phone can make a statement about the owner's musical taste. Music is everywhere, and in the process has become both more public and more private. We all travel through life with our own soundtrack—sometimes others can hear it; sometimes it's ours alone.

Visual artists, however, have been inspired by music throughout history. They have responded by transforming something that is arguably intangible, into visual, physical form. "Seeing Songs" presents an eclectic mix of work—mainly from the Museum's collections—that draws on music as inspiration, focusing on abstract as well as representational art and connections to musical forms as varied as classical, jazz, and pop. From lyrical works on paper by Wassily Kandinsky and a painting by Stuart Davis that depicts music as gesture and improvisation, to recent videos by Gillian Wearing and Candice Breitz that explore the relationship between pop stars and their fans, this exhibition brings together an international group of artists in whose work we see songs.

A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration

Huntington Theatre Company continues its 2009-2010 season with A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration, a new uplifting holiday event from Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, directed by Jessica Thebus, with music supervised, arranged and orchestrated by Daryl Waters.

It's Christmas Eve 1864. In the White House, President and Mrs. Lincoln plot their
gift-giving. On the Potomac, a young rebel soldier challenges a Union blacksmith's mercy. In the streets, a fugitive from slavery searches for her daughter on the night she finds freedom. In A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration, these stories and more are woven into an American tapestry, showing us that the gladness of one's heart is the greatest gift of all. This production includes beloved holiday music and will be enhanced by local choirs caroling before each performance.

Shows are Tuesday-Saturday evenings, Saturday and Sunday matinees, select Wednesday matinees and select Sunday and Monday evenings.

Join Socializing for Justice for our discussion group: "The Body" for Justice. POV: Body Image* on Monday, November 16th, 6:00pm at Sweetwater Cafe by Boylston T stop.

To connect to "the work" and each other in more intentional ways, SoJust is hosting monthly discussion groups focused on "The Body" through various points of view (POV). This is a place for us to explore what we have in common and where we differ on topics that are important to us. This is not a seminar - there will be no presentation - come with questions you'd like to explore. We'll creatively use the space: smaller groups to focus on specific topics, pairing up and popcorn questions. Join us to learn more about yourself and other SoJusters!

So you know what to expect here's what we have planned:
6pm Socializing - order dinner/drinks (30 min)
6:30 Gather in large circle for introductions (30 min)
7pm Break into small groups (30 min)
7:30 Report back (10 min)
7:40 Meet in pairs (10 min)
7:50 Report Back (10 min)
8pm Closing (10 min)
8:10 Socializing some more (20 min)
8:30 End

"The Body" for Justice Discussions are every 3rd Monday at Sweetwater Cafe. Possible future POV: race, feminism, gender, dating, war, abortion, safer sex, veganism and... your suggestion.

RSVP at www.sojust.org Newcomers always welcomed!

Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Looking for like-minded progressives to hang out with in Boston? Are you new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue coalitions? Join us!

YES, WE MEAN YOU. We've got members of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, levels of activism and professions. We hope you see someone like yourself and meet someone you otherwise wouldn't have.

HEY ORGANIZERS! If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers for the free lit table - and there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network!

*Sweetwater Cafe is located at 3 Boylston Street. T Directions: Take the Green Line to the Boylston Street Stop. Take a right onto Boylston Street and walk 1/2 a block. They are located in the alley on the lefthand side, across from Boston Commons. Nearest Orange Line stop is Chinatown. Unfortunately this venue is not wheelchair accessible.

Want to connect outside of SoJust events?
