Jean Claude Gracia captures the shimmering light of his native Gascony and his childhood home near Arles, in the heart of Provence, in lyrical landscapes and powerful figure studies that reflect a passionate response to his material. A graduate of the art school in Biarritz, he employs rich, saturated colors in a distinctive personal style that evokes both the intensity of Van Gogh and the sympathetic perception of Millet in his scenes of nature and the rustic life of France. His dynamic brushwork and the thick impasto surface of his canvases give his art a tactile quality that adds depth to his breathlessly kinetic compositions. The title he has chosen for his exhibition reveals his humanistic spirit and his devotion to the earth. He calls his art “an eruption of vibrant feelings, a celebration of light and fire.”

Gracia divides his time between his ancestral home in France and residences in New York City and Monroe. His paintings have been exhibited internationally as well as in New York City—he is included in the permanent exhibition of Galerie le Provence on Madison Avenue—New Jersey, Washington, Florida, and New Mexico, and are included in the permanent collections of museums in France, Spain, and Greece. Gracia is the winner of numerous honors including the prestigious Puffin Foundation Award, which he received in 2000 and 2008.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall,
in the City of Newburgh.
