Description | Art History Graduate Students Lecture Series Title Serifs and Seraphim: Eric Gill's Religious Commissions Description Sculpture and typography are intimately related in the work of Eric Gill (1882–1940). As a sculptor, printer, and typographer, Gill is an ideal figure for thinking about the intersections between type design and three-dimensional art forms, particularly in religious spaces. This lecture will examine his Stations of the Cross for Westminster Cathedral, along with his typographic and print designs. As a converted Catholic, Gill’s artmaking is filtered through a religious lens, an important factor in considering the history and genesis of his work. This melding of sculptural forms and typography in religious spaces speaks to a latter day sort of Arts and Crafts ideal, where spaces, like books, become holistic objects. Speaker Anna Wager is a PhD Candidate in Art History. |
