Description | Royal Alley-Barnes, MAT, was Jacob Lawrence’s first graduate student and instrumental in bringing Lawrence to the University of Washington in 1970. Alley-Barnes is executive director emerita of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, a city-owned facility and new non-profit in Seattle's Historic Central District. For more than 35 years, she has been connecting communities around public sector government and the arts. She has lectured, taught, and presented in the fields of visual arts, art history, art education, pluralistic arts community building, and public and non profit infrastructures. Royal was a 2009 City of Seattle Youth Commission Policy Leader, and she received the 2010 John C. Little Spirit Award and 2012 Ford Motor Company National "Freedom Sister" Award. She is a 2008 recipient of the prestigious Charles E. Odegaard Award for Outstanding Achievement from the University of Washington where she earned a BA, BS, and Master of Arts Teaching. An artist, arts advocate, and collaborative affiliate to diverse communities, she is currently the Founder and Chief Culture Officer of royalalleybarnes, inc Consultancy.
