Craig McGowan, Ph.D. Associate Professor in Department of Biological Science and the WWAMI Medical Education Program at the University of Idaho Science in Medicine WWAMI Lecture: "Comparative approaches to musculoskeletal biomechanics: Locomotion in humans and other animals" ABSTRACT: Locomotion is an evolutionarily significant behavior for nearly all terrestrial animals, including humans. Understanding how the mechanical demands of moving through the environment are met by different animals provides us unique insights in to the relationships between musculoskeletal structure and function. In this talk, I will discuss how examining animals with highly specialized morphologies and behaviors teaches us about the mechanical functions of muscles and tendons. I will also explore how lessons learned from animals can be applied to understanding how amputee athletes adapt to using prosthetic devices.
