Mary-Claire King, Ph.D. UW Professor, Medicine (Medical Genetics) & Genome Sciences Science in Medicine Distinguished Scientist Lecture: “INHERITED BREAST AND OVARIAN CANCER: FROM GENE DISCOVERY TO PRECISION MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH” Inaugurated in 1993, the Distinguished Scientist Lecture recognizes an accomplished UW senior scientist for outstanding achievements in their field of research. Dr. King's 40-year career has changed the way we understand inherited breast and ovarian cancer. In 2016 she received the National Medal of Science from President Barack Obama for discovering the BRCA1 gene linked to increased breast-cancer risk. Since 1983 her work in genetics and genomics has be used to uncover and resolve human rights abuses worldwide.
