Description | This class will introduce you to common foliar pests and diseases often seen in spring in the Pacific Northwest, including rusts, mildews, anthracnose, bacterial blights, tent caterpillars, mites, lacebugs, root weevils, and aphids. Plant Health Care (PHC) approaches to management, including acceptable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods will be covered. The course will include field diagnosis practice. We will have an indoor lab session for everyone to practice their diagnostic skills, so bring in those samples of plant problems! Attendance at "Foliar Pests & Diseases" is not required. This series will introduce you to plant diseases and insect pests of the Pacific Northwest when they are at their peak or most easily detected. We will look at some common and familiar species as well as some new and unusual pests you need to know. If you attended these classes in 2016, new material will be discussed this year. Plant specimen samples will be reviewed indoors in addition to diagnosing pest problems in the field. Least toxic and most sustainable pest management methods will be emphasized. Great diagnostic resources will be discussed and utilized. Students are encouraged to bring pest and disease samples to class for discussion and diagnosis.
