Description | NOTE: The location of this event has been changed to HUBB 334 UW Campus. In this talk, P. Sainath will be talking about the People's Archive of Rural India (PARI) which he founded. The People's Archive of Rural India is a non-commercial, non-profit, multi-media digital platform driven by volunteer effort. Specializing in rural labor and the working lives of Indians, PARI is an archive woven around still living generations (e.g. India's last freedom fighters now in their 80s and 90s), a journal driven by the reporting of professionals and also, very importantly, by communities traditionally excluded from the media. In this talk, Sainath will be talking about how PARI is bringing back storytelling to journalism, and is using the digital space to tell stories very differently, but with great rigor and research. P. Sainath is an Indian journalist and photojournalist who focuses on social and economic inequality, rural affairs, poverty and the aftermath of globalization in India. He is the founding editor of the People's Archive of Rural India. He is the author of Everybody Loves a Good Drought (1996, Penguin India) Access the PARI website here: ruralindiaonline.org |
