Description | Anadolu Rock, or Anatolian Rock, is a popular music genre from the Republic of Turkey made up of the fusion of international Rock & Roll with local folk, popular, and art musical instruments. While Anadolu Rock's commercial peak was in the 1970s, it is still a strong influence on Turkish popular music today. The history of Anadolu Rock draws attention both to issues such as personal agency, mass mediation, and cultural imperialism, and illustrates the ways by which cross-cultural and trans-national influence contributes to the creation of new forms of musical self expression. Golden Microphones and Electric Guitars is a presentation by Gabriel Skoog (PhD, Ethnomusicology) that starts with the earliest examples of proto-Anadolu Rock at the beginning of the 1960s and traces the ways Turkish performers combined genre cues from Rock & Roll and Turkish music to create a new genre designed to appeal to a range of listeners' expectations. |
