Mindful of ‘the middle ground’: mindfulness and compassion in difficult times Doors at 9.30 a.m Non-profit staff working with immigrant and refugee families report feeling caught in a ‘middle ground’ in which they need to both support their clients and offer them tools for building their own self-resilience. In this workshop Serena Maurer, PhD, will offer mindfulness and compassion tools and practices for navigating this ‘middle ground’ with immigrant and refugee clients. Participants will learn basic mindfulness and compassion concepts and approaches and some simple tools and practices they can use in their daily work with immigrant and refugee families to reduce stress and anxiety and build resiliency. Serena Maurer has a PhD in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies with a focus on immigration and spent twelve years teaching courses on race, gender, class, nationality, power and oppression for the UW and the Cultural Encounters Program at Roskilde University in Denmark.
