Date: Saturday, May 13th Time: 9:30am to 12:30* (*depending on length of presentations) Location: Savery 408 -------------------------------------------- Asian L&L and Jackson School 2017 Graduate Student Colloquium, “Discourse of the Everyday” Information: The one-day conference and workshop will provide an opportunity to both present research and to receive feedback on research projects. This collaboration is intended to foster interdisciplinary dialogue within the University and the region. Given the disciplinary constraints of our various fields, it is our hope that increased dialogue will foster new insights and reveal resources that will deepen our research. This year’s colloquium will explore the various facets of vernacularism. Broadly speaking, vernacularism reflects development of the local or a reinvestment of value in the everyday. As such, it touches on a wide variety of subjects, including cultural economy and nationalism, language politics, cosmopolitanism, urban redevelopment, ecocriticism, popular culture, cultural identity, sustainability, and local tradition. Conference presenters will deliver a talk no longer than 15 minutes that summarizes research in progress and should connect with the theme of vernacularism. Workshop participants can submit a work in progress--not necessarily connected to the theme of vernacularism--to other members one week in advance and agree to read other participants’ submissions and provide constructive feedback. Coffee and tea will be provided. -------------------------------------------- Speakers: • Sarah Clayton • Benjamin DeTora • Nathaniel Bond • Christopher Lowy • Ross Henderson • Michael Butcher • Daniel Murphree |
