Description | Dr. Ann Culligan Lecturer of Psychology, University of Washington Fostering Student Success in the 21st Century Our students are both unique in the strengths and challenges they bring to our classes, and timeless in the similarities they share with generations who have studied before them. Students today have come of age in a world different from that in which their professors went to college. They are digital natives, divergent thinkers, and highly anxious students who face a very different set of employment opportunities and requirements after college. However, like previous generations, they are also academically capable and highly motivated to succeed. Given the current patterns of demands and opportunities faced by modern students, providing a meaningful education requires us to recognize these patterns and adapt our teaching to best serve the students before us. In this talk, I will discuss some details of who these students are, what they bring to and need from their college education, and how I am working to meet these needs in my own classes. Dr. Culligan's talk is part of her promotion review in the Department of Psychology. |
