Description | Please note that there will not be free parking on campus this afternoon due to a football game. In fact, parking appears to cost $40 on game days, and street parking near campus is often restricted on game days. Check the Gallery's website for information about getting there without a car. Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet its editors are predominantly white, male, and English speaking. The way information is shared and presented conforms to the interests of this demographic, creating an alarming absence of voices. To change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of edit-a-thons to bring together diverse voices and improve Wikipedia’s coverage of queer and womxn artists of color.Today's event will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for Northwest Coast Indigenous art and Indigenous womxn artists. Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. Please RSVP through the Facebook event link above. |
