Description | Jimmy Calanchini Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral research fellow at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg Micro- and Macro-level Perspectives on Implicit Social Cognition Implicit measures have revolutionized psychological science by providing insight into mental contents that people are often unwilling or unable to report directly. Building upon these advantages, Dr. Calanchini will present data from two complementary lines of research that enhance the explanatory power of implicit measures. In one line of research, he aggregates implicit attitudes and stereotypes at the region level, and will highlight what this approach can reveal about judgments and behaviors that can be difficult or impossible to study in the laboratory. In a second line of research, he uses formal mathematical models to separate implicit attitudes into their component cognitive processes, and will focus on how this approach can help to improve implicit bias reduction interventions. Taken together, this work advances social cognitive theory, and has implications for a variety of domains, including intergroup relations, social ecology, and executive function. Jimmy Calanchini is a candidate for a faculty position in the Social and Personality area in the Department of Psychology. Faculty host: Sapna Cheryan: scheryan@uw.edu. |
