This workshop is geared towards graduate students of color interested in challenging microaggressions that may occur in the classroom. Microaggressions - everyday verbal slights and behaviors rooted in biases and stereotypes based on race, gender, class, among other social identities - often cause confusion, distress, anger, and a host of other reactions by individuals that experience microaggressions. In this interactive workshop, co-facilitated by Vanessa Álvarez of GO-MAP and Jaye Sablan of Core Programs, students will be introduced to concepts related to microaggressions and strategies to interrupt them on campus and in our everyday lives. This event is two hours long with a scheduled snack break. Students are encouraged to attend for a catered buffet dinner after the workshop to help build community across campus. In addition to dinner, light appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks will also be provided. The Spring Quarter 2018 GO-MAP Power Hour is sponsored in partnership with the University of Washington Graduate School and the University of Washington School of Public Health. It is the third in a series of quarterly GO-MAP programming events hosted in the Health Sciences complex during the 2017-18 academic year.
