Description | Optimization of Electricity and Gas Networks The design, control, and operation of energy systems typically require the solving of optimization problems over physical laws. The resulting optimization programs are often computationally challenging and increasingly so with the integration of renewable energy, the need for more resilience, and network integration. This talk reviews recent progress in this area, including some surprising complexity results and a number of theoretical and computational advances that have radically changed the field in the last 5 years. The talk will then present some novel results in the design and control gas networks, which have become increasingly important in the energy mix. The talk will conclude by a review of some fundamental challenges in the field, including the integration of electricity and gas networks. Bio: Pascal Van Hentenryck is the Seth Bonder Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. His current research is at the intersection of optimization and data science, with applications in energy, transportation, and recommendation systems. He is the author of the pioneering CHIP and OPL optimization systems, which have been widely used in academia and industry, and of five MIT Press books. Van Hentenryck has been awarded two honorary degrees, the INFORMS ICS price for research excellence at the intersection of computer science and operations research, the ACP Award for research excellence in constraint programming, the Philip J. Bray for Teaching excellence at Brown University, an NSF young investigator award, as well as numerous best-paper awards. |
