Description | Robots are a sci-fi staple, but recent advances making them smarter, cheaper, and more effective mean they’ll soon be a part of our everyday lives. Much of this progress came about because of the introduction of small, inexpensive video cameras that are commonly used in gaming applications like Microsoft Kinect. These cameras provide color and depth information so robots can see and interact with the world in 3D. Professor Fox, head of the UW Robotics and State Estimation (RSE) Lab, will explain how cutting-edge robots are learning to do 3D mapping, recognize and manipulate objects and tracking human movement and poses. Fox co-leads the Intel Science and Technology Center for Pervasive Computing, an interdisciplinary collaboration that brings together expertise at the UW, Intel and institutions that include Georgia Tech and UCLA. |
