Shaping the First Year Experience for Undergraduate Students through the Engineering Communication Program Dr. Dianne Hendricks is a Lecturer in the UW Department of Bioengineering. She has extensive experience in curriculum development and her teaching interests include undergraduate writing and technical communication, introductory engineering, ethics and social justice in engineering, service learning, design, and honors courses. She was nominated for the UW College of Engineering Faculty Teaching Award in 2017. Dr. Hendricks has an interdisciplinary science and engineering background and extensive experience leading teams and teaching writing-intensive engineering courses. Prior to joining the UW Bioengineering faculty in 2013, Dr. Hendricks held staff teaching positions in the Biomedical Engineering and Biology departments at Duke University. She earned a BS in Molecular Biology and a BA in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in Genetics at Duke University. Dr. Hendricks is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in engineering education. She has developed two honors courses that focus on the interplay of ethics and diversity in engineering. Her scholarship is focused on developing pedagogical innovations in engineering education involving peer review of capstone reports, reflection to enhance student engagement, universal design, diversity and ethics, and educational outreach. Dr. Hendricks has over ten years of experience in leading K-12 educational outreach initiatives. She is the faculty lead for Bioengineering Outreach (https://bioe.uw.edu/outreach/), which engages UW undergraduates in providing engineering opportunities for underrepresented students in STEM. In addition, she is a co-founder and faculty advisor for HuskyADAPT (Accessible Design and Play Technology), and mentors student teams in designing solutions for people with disabilities (https://depts.washington.edu/adaptuw/).
