Description | Tribal Historic Preservation Offices are charged with the responsibility of preserving, maintaining, and revitalizing tribal cultural resources for future generations. How does a tribal nation develop an approach to archaeology and historic preservation that is rooted in the values of their nation and
community? Dr. Ora Marek-Martinez (Navajo Nation, Northern Arizona University) will moderate a discussion with Washington and Oregon Tribal Historic Preservation Offices that highlights the unique issues that tribal communities encounter when attempting to care for their cultural heritage. Panelists will address how their offices balance the requirements of state and federal heritage regulations with the specific needs and cultural values of the nations they represent and will also share the strategies they use to articulate and implement sovereignty-based approaches to archaeology and historic preservation. Panelists - Dr. Ora Marek-Martinez, Navajo Nation, Northern Arizona University
- Dr. Sara Gonzalez, University of Washington
- Briece Edwards, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon THPO
- Steven Mullen-Moses, Snoqualmie Tribe THPO
- Pat Baird, Nez Perce THPO
