Victoria Santos has a passion for inclusive, sustainable community and creative approaches to learning and growth. Born in the Dominican Republic, Victoria immigrated to the U.S. at age 11. Victoria’s commitment to social justice and service has expressed itself in many forms over the past 20 years, including school-based counseling and community-based enrichment programs for underserved youth, as well as community development in the U.S. and internationally. She co-directs the non-profit Sister Island Project, which promotes diversity awareness, cultural exchange and sustainable development in the Dominican Republic. Feminist and Queer zine and button making workshop ~ 2:15-4:00 pm Directions: 2:15-2:30; workshop ongoing until 4:00 pm Join UW Bothell alum Michaella Rosner and the Writing and Communication Center to learn about queer and feminist zines: small, do-it-yourself publications that create space for perspectives often ignored by mainstream media. We will briefly discuss the history and social context of zines, demonstrate examples of some zine-making techniques, and provide time and materials to make your own zine pages. We will also have a button-making machine to create feminist buttons! “A Girl in the River,” film and discussion ~ 2:15-3:10 pm A woman in Pakistan sentenced to death for falling in love becomes a rare survivor of the country's harsh judicial system. Student researchers and interns poster presentations ~ 2:30-3:15 pm Meet students who have conducted GWSS research and internships. Visit them at their posters to learn more about their projects. Round table discussion about the elections ~ 3:15-4:00 pm Facilitated by Professor Camille Walsh with Professors Minda Martin & Kari Lerum about history, misogyny, and hate-speech in the 2016 presidential elections.
