Description | An evening of readings and presentations from several intermedia artists and writers working with technology, bio-art, and sound! Amaranth Borsuk, micha cárdenas, Ian Hatcher, Lisa Ma, and Lisa Samuels will present interactive texts, sound performances, participatory art interventions, and poetry. BIOS: Amaranth Borsuk is the author, most recently, of Pomegranate Eater (Kore Press, 2016), a collection of poems. Abra (1913 Press, 2016), a book of mutating poems created with Kate Durbin, received an NEA-sponsored Expanded Artists’ Books grant from the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago and was recently released as a limited-edition book with a free iPad / iPhone app created by Ian Hatcher. Dr. micha cárdenas directs the Poetic Operations Collaborative, a design research lab at the University of Washington Bothell applying technological creativity to advance social justice. cárdenas is an artist/theorist who creates mobile media to reduce violence and increase health. cárdenas’ forthcoming book, Shifting Poetics uses practice-based research to understand trans of color movement in digital media, where movement includes migration, performance and mobility. Ian Hatcher is a text/sound/code artist, author of Prosthesis (Poor Claudia, 2016) and developer of the poetry app Abra, a collaboration with Amaranth Borsuk and Kate Durbin. His code-inflected vocal performances have been presented widely in the US and Europe. He lives in Brooklyn. Lisa Ma specializes in new social possibilities of the future. Exploring the fringes of society, Lisa Ma designs platforms of engagement to resonate deeply with the global technological community. Combining ethnographic research and speculative design, Lisa Ma creates surprising services for Belgian urban foragers of vegetarian towns, Chinese factory workers of joystick factories, London cat ladies, anti-tech Luddites in the America Northwest. She finds insights that provoke the mainstream by revealing the conflict between what we do and what we believe in. Lisa Samuels has published thirteen books of poetry and prose, with recent experiments in memoir (Anti M, 2013) and the novel (Tender Girl, 2015). Her book-length transmigration poem Tomorrowland (2009) is being made into an art film by director Wes Tank, and her poetry has inspired musical scores by composer Frédéric Pattar and others. Samuels also creates soundwork and writes critical essays, including Over Hear: six types of poetry experiment in Aotearoa/New Zealand (2015). |
