Drawn from an institutional ethnographic study of juvenile prison schooling, this talk focuses on the state’s heteropatriarchal disciplinary relationship to young women who defy its raced and gendered narratives around captivity. Sabina E. Vaught is Associate Professor and Chair of Education and Director of Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Tufts University. She is also co-chair of the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women & Sexuality at MIT. Her forthcoming book, Compulsory: Education and the Dispossession of Youth in a Juvenile Prison School (University of Minnesota Press), is an ethnography of one state’s juvenile prison schooling system.
