100 years ago this November, seven men died in a gun battle that erupted when a steamer carrying members of the Industrial Workers of the World attempted to dock at the Everett waterfront. The Wobblies had embarked from Seattle to support a strike by shingle mill workers. They were met by the Snohomish County Sheriff and 200 hastily deputized Everett men. Moments later seven were dead and dozens lay wounded. In the aftermath, 73 Wobblies were arrested and charged with murder. A sensational trial resulted in acquittal, but the story of Everett did not end. The Wobblies vowed to “Never Forget” and in the months and years that followed they memorialized the brutal events in song and story. To commemorate the centennial, acclaimed folk duo Rebel Voices will bring the events of November 1916 to life in a performance that mixes history and music. Susan Lewis and Janet Stecher are known throughout the Northwest for their recordings and performances of labor songs and especially the music of the IWW. In performance, they immerse their audience in a program of songs, humor and theater woven together with wit and intricate harmonies. |
