Description | Lecture by Prof. Joy Connolly of the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Joy Connolly, who began her career as an Assistant Professor of Classics at UW (1997–2000), became Provost and Senior Vice-President of CUNY Graduate Center in August 2016, following some years as Dean for Humanities and Professor of Classics at NYU. Between UW and NYU she taught Classics and Political Science for four years at Stanford. Joy’s research focusses on Roman ideas about rhetoric, political action, and aesthetics, and on modern receptions of those ideas from the eighteenth century to the present day. She is the author of The State of Speech: Rhetoric and Political Thought in Ancient Rome (Princeton 2007) and The Life of Roman Republicanism (Princeton 2014); her articles embrace topics in declamation, epic, elegy and pastoral poetry. Joy’s undergraduate degree is from Princeton (1991) and her PhD from Penn (1997). |
