Description | IAS faculty member Alka Kurian along with Professor Nalini Iyer (SU) are producing a symposium on "Boundaries and Belongings," which takes place on October 10th, UW Seattle. Jointly organized by Tasveer and the South Asia Center, UW Seattle, it is part of Tasveer Seattle South Asian Film Festival tasveer.org The symposium focuses on how, despite the shared cultural, political and historical legacies, the eight nation-states of South Asia—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives—stand divided along national and intra-national borders by means of conflicts, wars, and brutalizations of caste, ethnic, religious, and gendered bodies. And yet, alternative imaginaries of South Asia by means of dialogue and dissent through art (film, music, literature) demonstrate the ways in which we all belong despite the borders that separate us from each other. The symposium is divided into the following panels and film screening. All are invited. 1. Panel 1 (11:00- 1:00PM): Cultural Homogenization and Dissent in South Asia 2. Panel 2 (2:00- 4:00PM): Decolonizing Sexuality in South Asia 3. Program III: (4:00- 6:00 PM): Film screening and Roundtable Discussion 4. Program IV, Final Program (7:00- 9:00 PM): Film Screening For further details, please contact Alka Kurian at alkak@uw.edu |
