Please join us for the third event in the Indigenous Feminisms series on October 20th at 3:00pm. The theme of this discussion is A Loving Rebellion, and the two speakers are Sara Hunt and Marita Growing Thunder. Sarah Hunt is a Kwagiulth scholar whose anti-violence work is grounded in 15 years of collaboration with Indigenous communities to address diverse issues related to justice, health, gender and sexuality. She was awarded a Governor General’s Gold Medal for her doctoral research which investigated the relationship between law and violence in ongoing neocolonial relations, asking how violence gains visibility through Indigenous and Canadian socio-legal discourse and action. The numbers of missing and murdered women are more than statistics to Marita Growing Thunder, whose two aunts were murdered. Marita combines art and activism to remember Native women that were taken tragically by violence by creating a new traditional dress every day. Her traditional dressmaking is a part of the larger Save Our Sisters Project, where people use visual and practical arts to spread awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women. |
