Description | How do you evaluate health? Do you make assumptions about health from someone's appearance, body shape, weight, or observed behaviors? Are you aware of your own bias about weight and size? Each day, we receive many messages about our health and our weight. Yet, finding a truly holistic approach to health can be challenging. This presentation addresses how to navigate the complexity of weight and health through the introduction of the Health at Every Size approach to wellness. Essential to this approach is an understanding of how size-stigma and weight discrimination affect health and access to care. Problematic public health messages will also be addressed in the context of understanding how well-intentioned health campaigns can promote racist, size-ist, sexist, and classist messages. These complex issues will be discussed through an interactive presentation by Julie Church, RDN, CD, CEDS from Opal: Food+Body Wisdom, and a personal story and research presentation from Erin Harrop, MSW. |
