DESCRIPTION:Combining the crackled surface of raku ceramic with the tran
sparency of cold-mold glass\, Portland-based artist Judy Hill creates fi
gurative sculptures that have an unexpectedly charged psychological pres
ence. With more than 10 figurines and 4 works on paper on display\, Hill
reinforces the figures’ fragility through the exploitation of the mediu
m’s inherent lightness and draws the viewer into the inner life of the f
 igure.

DESCRIPTION:The first part of the 20th century was a time of growth and
sophistication in Oregon and Washington. The Lewis and Clark Centennial
Exposition in Portland (1905) and the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition in
Seattle (1909) inspired the establishment of regional Arts & Crafts soc
ieties and schools. Businesses and individuals capitalized on the moveme
nt to introduce new products. Distributors assured that the work of the
most significant American companies was shown and promoted in local depa
rtment stores\, galleries and shops. Kreisman describes the rich legacy
 of regional architecture\, furniture\, metalwork\, stained glass\, ceram
ics and crafts\, printing\, photography\, and other aspects of the movem
 ent in Washington and Oregon.
